Boxters are TOTAL Pants IMHO
and have loads expensive problems associated with them if you go second hand..

To own one simply proves to the world you cannot afford a proper one.

If you want an open top sports car a Honda S2000 is a way better proposition for your money.

Yes - I went from a slow 2001 WRX to a 944 turbo. Perhaps not want you want to hear, but still a fine car, even in this day.

The car never ceases to amaze me at it's abilities.

boxster s may be the cheap mans prosche but they are not as pants as i once thought.my boss took me out in his and i was pretty impressed.still not as fast as my 400+bhp rice rocket lol.

I thought the same about the Boxter untill i went out in my friends and my opinion changed about them. They are a great car, fair doose his was a top of the range S but still. I personally would much prefer one to a TT, S2000, Crossfire etc etc..

I went from a 93 WRX to a 944 Cab back in June 2003 (which was a 91 plate) after that i was hooked....the Porsche is so well built and a fantastic car to drive.

I took the wife to Luxembourg in it and it was so comfortable.

I kept that for just over a year and then went and bought a 965 Turbo 2 and that is just awesome....(3.6 version)

I would never ever want another car apart from a Porsche.

Do it you wont regret it.

I had 3 Scoobies in a row a MY2000,MY2001,MY2003 STi all of which where modified the last one kicked just under 370bhp
Then had two BMW 3.00lt Z4,s both of which embaresed to many Scoobs on track.
Took delivery of a new MY2005 Boxster 987 S yesterday morning and let me tell you they are in a class apart fom my last few cars.
O.K it may not have the ultimate accelaration of the Scooby but the build quality and handling are on another level.
Very impressed so far.

I went from STi Type R to a 996. In 10,000 miles, not a single thing has gone wrong with the Porsche. The scoob went through two engines in 10,000 miles.

99 Scoob to 03 996 C2 (via Evo 6).

The 996 is a much more satisfying car to drive. Practicality aside, everything about the car is better.

The guy saying boxsters are pants doesn't know what he's talking about either. I initially ordered a boxster S to replace the Evo until I decided I had to have a 911. It's a thoroughly different driving experience, and as a car in which to really savour a long drive (as opposed to just raise your adrenalin levels in a 10 minute blast) is supreme.

My 996 is now sold and replaced by a family friendly Audi RS6. But it's porsches I still get a twinge of longing for when I see one, not subarus/evos.

I have a GT3 on order, but I'm also very tempted by the new RS4.

You can get some nice 2nd hand GT3's here for not that bad money.

The one I drove was a 911 3.6 4 four drive one with 2 turbo's, I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of taking it around Millbrook test track with a Porsche test driver, and we got to 185 on the high speed circuit, but the accelaration of of it was out of this world and the handling was second to none, beautiful drivers car IMHO

Ive had a couple of Boxster S's and they are amazing .... The are also good in a crash too :-( It held up well .


Ive never owned a Scooby myself, but have borrowed the odd Turbo from work

The comment about the boxster being a poor mans 911 is rubbish - the boxster is the best car in its class. Its not a 911.

And I dont have a boxster - have 993 TT, evo 7 before that. Porker is a superb car - far more ability,better built etc etc.

Only downside is very high servicing costs - last service was £1800 - and one before that was £4000 - did need new tyres,discs and a new alloy - at £900 per alloy!

Also get a lot of abuse in porker - everyone wants to race/tailgate - usually chavs/white van man and the odd rep. Get at least one incident per week.

I used to have an MY02sti and now have a 550bhp ruf powered 996 911 chalk and cheese really.

Anyways hopefully the scoobynet police won't jump on me for replying to this post

In evo mag, the boxster S was slighly quicker around bedford autodrome than the new 911

went from Sti Wagon to 996 C4, very different cars. Practicality,sound,build quality,brakes and Turbo to NA acceleration the biggest differences. C4 is much smoother and constant in acceleration and 'just keeps going' above 100.
Interior of 996 is light years ahead of 993 so it depends on what you're looking for, personally I could not at the time justify 40+ grand for a 993 with a Cortina like interior. So went for a 996.
Some niggles on 996 are crappy wipers(can't seem to keep the rear one on intermittent) and some of the interior switchgear is a little too lightweight.

Agree 993 interior is dated but there has never been a better built porsche than the 993.


Also 993 values are holding better than 996, a similar year 993 S (wide bodied) is worth more than a 996. Plus I reckon the 993 is a better looking car and sounds better too, I would be biased though driving a 993 TT.

I'm lucky to run both cars, a 996 C4S 04 MY and a an everyday workhorse a STi JDM Wagon 01 MY.

Both full time 4 wheel drive and that is exactly where the similarity ends, the wagon has 300 Bhp with an AST suspension and a few other sensible modifications so in terms of power comparison it's fairly close.

Sorry but the 996 is a class apart as it should be, £70k vs a £25k. The sccob does everything it needs to and a bit more the 996 just does even more and nvere ceases to amaze.

The comment about the Boxster S is comical! Does the author drive a Nova?

Later 993's definately appear more reliable than very early 996's and prices reflect this, supply and demand also helps 993's. Given the difference in lifecycle its not surprising that late 993's are at the peak of reliability.
996 C4S is however a very nice looking car(only got the bog standard c4 myself ), I also need to shop for my car with my wife so it needs to be nice inside

I went from My02 to "99 996 C2 - go for it you wont look back.

But.... Be aware that the 3.4 996's are prone to engine failure - so if you get on either ensure it has a latter 3.4 engine (just like mine ) or if you can afford it go for a 3.6.

As for interior - its light years ahead of the scoob.

For the handling - umm.. well - I swapped in Decemeber last year when it was shall we say a bit damp.. If you dont get one with PSM then you need to treat them with respect - having said that since its been dry I can only say they stick to the road.

My only problem now is convincing the wife I need a 3.6 C4S!

yup best move I've made (so far i.e. no horrendous bills). Went from a WRX to an 'old' 911 turbo (for those in the know it's a 930). So much more fun & involving to drive, whereas the WRX was quite sterile & offered no comparable feel good factor (at least to me). I've had the opportunity to, erm , compare my car against a number of turbo Imprezas & have managed to **** all over them (straights & bends). Clearly I'm a driving god..... Needless to say, in the wet the car can be rather scary. Don't get me wrong, I loved my WRX & had great fun in it, but as a driving & ownership experience, there is simply no comparison.

Interesting reaction to my comment though! Scoobynet police are on form as usual!

I actually do think the 3.2S Boxter is a great package although at the moment I am looking more at either a 996 C4S 3.6 or a GT3

I also hold a high regard for the 944 Turbo slim_boy_fat
