I would personally rather drive a manual, but if you want to sell it again i am afraid auto will be much better by a few thousand in 2/3 years +

Haven't you driven them to see the difference. 'typically' it's always been bmw=manual, merc=auto. Maybe the 645 auto is ok, maybe not. Try bmw forums too.

B,

With 645's and 545's you'd be better off going for the auto. It's just that kind of car. You'll be better off in the long run as they'll be worth more in the future.

Am I the only one who can see "Resale value doesn't matter, as I'm leasing it" - or was it added after the messages above?

Nope, I'm just blind. This braille keyboard is great.......................

B,

If that's the case, get whatever floats your boat. I'd have a manual!

I'd go for the manual too. Car mags seem to prefer the lighter and more wieldy 3 litre. Could you have a very gadget laden one of these instead?

Another vote for the manual. Had a 325i and 535i before the Scoob, both manual and great to drive hard.

All the 645s i've seen so far are autos if that means anything

The choices are: a standard 6 speed manual box, a 6 speed automatic and 6 speed SMG with a normal looking gear lever and shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

BMW say that the auto boxes sort of adapt to how you drive, hold on to the gears longer and change real quick. So i guess people prefer to go for this new technology.

I'm old school and would chose a manual no matter what.

Definitely manual, although I'd like to try an SMG for comparison but I'm not convinced I'd feel like I was driving, even though it's still a "proper" box underneath. Wouldn't touch an old-school sludgebox, feels very detached from the car even if they have got buttons on the steering wheel. Defeats the point IMO in developing a car with a nimble chassis and sharp steering with nice feedback etc - feel "connected" - then disconnect yourself by throwing in a sludgebox .

Although I suppose if it's only for the image that's a different matter....
