Just bought me a 306 GTi-6 !!
After months of looking at Golf VR6's and getting bored of looking at the same **** time after time I went to look at a GTi-6. R plate, 90k miles.
To be used as a stripped out 'Ring car. Great to drive, damn fast once wound up.
Nice and cheap to run/maintain. Perfect!!
I did love the VR6 but couldn't find a decent one.
Now, the task begins of prepping this bad boy for the 'Ring. First step, lose the "courier" tyres to make room for something better, get it serviced and we're off.
Stripped out, buckets, rollcage etc will be done progressively over the coming months.
Any advice from owners about these motors? I kinda bought it without knowing too much about them, other than I liked how it drove

Once the above is done all the money will be going on making it go around tracks faster.

I'm sure there are plenty of ****ters out there, this was spot on though. Totally standard and just been used and maintained normally/correctly.
VR6's. Well, I looked at 5 in total. Either bodywork was great but clunking tappety engine or vice versa or both were fooocked. Saw one with oil p!ssing out the engine and dripping everywhere and the other emitted scary amounts of dirty smoke under acceleration. With the VR6 there was always "something" I found. I'm sure good ones are to be had but i needed a car as I wanna go to the 'Ring again before I'm 50yrs old.
Looking at it, Pug is a cheaper overall option, every bit as fast and handles better too. So probably fate worked for me in this case.

No, I was taliking Golfs, I was wondering what was wrong with the VR6's as the GTI (Golf) I looked at was a rusty piece of ****, that was enough to put me off the Golf idea, the guy asked me what I expected for 2 and a half grand, he did ask so I told him !
Headlights without water in
Doors without filler/rust
a Car without every corner dented
Dry Carpets
Some compression for the pistons
A dash I couldnt see my face in
seats without obvious sperm damage
paint (it was white) without trawler-esque rust stains
no moss
a less organic smelling interior
Tyres that had some tread, and a brand I had heard of, all 4 were different !
A stereo that was indeed stereo (only one channel worked, it was advertised as a face off Pioneer and speakers, it was a mono tape on standard speakers, circa 1990
No plume of smoke
Some documentation
Does this match your experience of old Golf's, not quite as robust as people seem to think, I think your Peugeot is by far the better bet, will handle well and wont be rusty.
Enjoy

Aye theres some real shabby mk3 gti's about these days and sellers still wanting big cash.
I fancied a gti-6 3 years back but they were silly money at the time so I bought a civic vti instead, gti-6 is a good 'hot hatch'.

Good choice... I've owned both the GTi-6 and Rallye, currently knocking about in a cheap Phase 1 GTi-6, paid peanuts for it and it's a cracker!
As someone else said, get over to www.306gti6.com

I have to say I think you've made a good choice (for once). I have played on track with a couple of GTi6's in my 205 and they overtook and get away from me.
I would own a rallye if I was after a cheap fun run around.
Gary
Oh and I wonder what ever happened to the Vectra thread and my £20 bet with you? Might have to resurect that and tell the world how you payed up

Had a 306 GTi-6 before the scoob and really loved it. In fact if I could find a mint low-miler I'd flog the scoob and get another one (now I've got the 'scoob thing' out of my system). However it's not exactly easy finding good ones.

The one I bought has 90k on it and NEEDS a service/cambelt. I wouldn't have bought it for road use due to mileage, however I'm gonna strip the thing bare so it's ideal.
Like most GTi type cars - most have been owned by bell ends (...like me) so not all are mint.

Fair play what you reckon, but I've not found any motoring press that do not rate them.
Horses for courses I suppose.

Hardly slow, they were a mid 7 second 0-60 car, which was fairly rapid for the era of the hot hatch. The hot hatch to beat for about 5 years too, all the press loved it!

Usually takes a month or two to be at one with a hot hatch
