Cheapest is to adjust the actuator for more boost (up to around 15psi) and re-jet the carb... Should give you around 150bhp...

Prob get you 170 bhp ish Be worth taking the head off and wire-ringing
the wet liners though, as the gasket will definately go otherwise

thanks for the info so far
i was given a r5 shell with cage etc, so was planning on taking out the r11 engine and gearbox and putting them in the r5, is it a straight swap?
So we could look at the engine at the same time.. starting to sound expensive with bigger i/c, rad, turbo etc.. how much do they go for? and is it really worth it for 20bhp more?
I am test driving the r11 tomorrow - anything to check out for?

11 has an air cooled turbo, 5 is watercooled
11 had lower ratios
11 diddnt have the carb anti-perculation fan
Prob others too but nothing should cause any major concerns
Guessing, about £700 for the turbo etc.. Might give a bit more than 170, but would start to cause problems, I think the rad/intercooler would be worth doing anyway though if using the car in competion.
Main things to check are the head gaskek (check if the top hose pressurises), clutch, and turbo.

Well went and saw it, had a slipping clutch, and the garage who was selling it said it would be £300 to fix! on top of the £600 they wanted for the car
anyway... spotted in the paper a 1986 Renault 9 Turbo, is this the same engine/gearbox, and could it fit into the r5?

reno 9 is the same as the 11. the engine is the 11 and 9 is the same thats in the reno 5 GTT
clutch to fit was so expensive as its an engine out job, job card says 10 hours to do. although you can drop the subframe and do it that way but its a definate fiddly job....
If you was gonna hillclimb it Id sort the cooling out first. copper core rad, flow the IC unless u can get your hands on an alloy jobbie. 15psi maybe a T25 turbo (£500) and you should be fine for good reliable £160bhp. if u want more your looking at spending a bit more dosh though, cam and headwork IMO

to be honest Im not exactly sure about the gearbox. think its the exact same set up as the 11 but think the 11 might be slightly different to the 5. best bet is to have a nosey on www.rtoc.org and see what info you can find on there

150BHP from upping the boost will blow it all to pieces IMO. It'll be a 15+ year old turbo engine running on clockwork ignition and fuelling.
There was a capacity upgrade done by (I think) Prima Racing using the Renault 1.7 engine. It was a 'proper money' job at the time but it was covered in Fast Car so it might be possible to duplicate the work for some peanuts these days.

15psi and 150hp was always the "safe" limit.. I hear what you saying about the age of the car though..
Clutches are difficult to change as DaveGTT says, I changed mine in a night after work though, just jacking the subframe down.. Get the OEM Valeo upgrade clutch (from a Volvo 480 Turbo I think), dont bother with the expensive "high performance" stuff...
