Running in a new car
Hi Guys,
My brother in law is getting his new Mini Cooper S today. He's not sure if it needs running in for the first 1000 miles though. Do new cars still need running in please?
Cheers
Steve

Lotus downlaod the telemetry from the ECU at the 1000 mile service, and, if you've gone OTT disregarding the running in directions the warranty may be voided in the event of an engine claim. Just a warning, don't know if other makes do this.

I took the first 200-300 miles to bed brakes / tyres etc in before i battered the hell out of my 05 fabia RS. Now 2250 miles on the clock and getting quicker by the day. Was already pulling stock power by the 2nd week as i rent to a RR shoot out, so a constant battering will make them quick and imporve the gearchange in some cars !?!?!
P.S 15 mins for the oil to warm up is all it takes in the morning. And any car should be driven carefully in the last 2 miles of your journey. With regular servicing and the above tips, the car should last at least until the end of the warrenty, when i don't suppose you will care !

It WILL perform better if it's given work to do during the first few hundred miles -- just don't thrash it, and don't baby it.
By all means accelerate briskly through the gears, but don't use FULL throttle and take it to about 4 - 4.5K but NOT the redline. As above, give it 10-15 mins to warm up before the above.
Suggest he does this on the way home from the dealers if possible, it's good to get the piston rings seated nice and early, and they only seat properly if given a bit of work to do.
