honda Vtec
Hi all,
I watched an old top gear the other day where clarkson reviews the s2000, and he makes this statement:
out of 5m ( or was it 15m ) vtec units honda have made, none have gone wrong.
Now that simply can't be the case... I presume what they're saying is that the vtec system itself never faults, but that other parts of the engine presumably do...
Of course, if honda wanna give me an s2000 and i'll see if i can blow it up, then i'm more than willing to give it a go...
Dan

Yup, apparently no vtec systems have broken. The engines are solid too but obviously some go pop (mainly due to ignorant owners not topping up the oil, same with anycar really).
Put it this way, BMW's vanos(similar to vtec) don't quite have the same reliability

Is that an S2000 you have then? Wow! Have you simply serviced it as required, or in addition to requirements?

My brother has a 1600 VTEC in his rallycross mini and that had covered 85,000 miles before it went into the car. We simply changed the cambelt and oil and it has not missed a beat in nearly 3 years. I know from the previous owner of the car we took the engine from that he caned it every time he drove it too. The sump had a massive dent in the bottom and it had actually bent the oil pick up pipe.
It is also bounced off the 8800 (Hit 8875 RPM according to the downloaded DTA data) RPM rev limiter every single gear change.

Yeah my Civic was a Vtec and it screamed it's lungs out every time i drove it.
It's just a case of treating it with respect. Warm it up properly and let it cool down. Check oil and water regularly and they'll go on forever. I still see the car in Aberdeen sometimes. It belongs to a Rover mechanic who was chatting to a mutual acquaintance and it seems the car has never skipped a beat since he's owned it and that's 80k miles since i had it!!!!
If any engine was ever going to blow it would be that one. It was my first car......i drove it like i stole it and did all the foolish things new drivers do! It's low centre of gravity meant really really great handbrake turns!!!!!
Superb engine tho. Even for a wee 1600cc it had great power.

Don't forget, that claim from Honda is based on engines "still under Warranty" I'm fairly sure.
Even though the vtec systems are ultra reliable I simply cannot believe NONE have failed in all that time personally.
Having said that, mines still going strong

I guess the warranty bit is right as they probably cant account for the ones with 100k on them where people might not go to a dealer to have it fixed. That said, you very very rarely hear of a problem.

I've blown a K20A iVTEC and I have the £3.5K repair bill to prove it (sub 20K miles)
And I'm not the only one - Pics of Andy's Broken K20A

Piston through the block isnt a VTEC failure Thats quite some mess though. You are in a massive minority though.... Ask how many scoob engines have gone pop
Am I right in thinking that piston has turned into a ball of metal?!
Not sure what they class as the vtec part though, guess its the hydraulic lifters / cams etc...

love them or hate them (vtec engines that is) that's a remarkable feat for any engineering company at any level. has to be failure within the warranty period but i bet the stats are good for even 5-6 year old models.

RE: Piston through the block, going into 1st/2nd instead of 3rd/4th perchance No manufacturer could design against that unless we all start having automatics!

And probably expensive on road cars, however nice idea. This thing hardly happens anyway, and those that do it soon learn the hard way not to do it again
