Probably the worst car Mercedes have built in the last 30 years. Poorly built, poor handlers, not great off road, not great on road, too soft, expensive to run (esp petrol ones), expensive to buy, not great reliability, comes near the bottom of all the driver power surveys (indeed bottom in the jd power one last year!). The car was quickly and cynically designed for the US market, not the european one so it drives much like big US cars. However, it has a 'Mercedes' badge on it and that's good enough for many.

The older ones built in US are defo ones to avoid, however the newer ones were built in Austria so get one of those if you must. Personally I'd consider some, actually all of the competition, most/all are better.

However, if you like them and it 'does it' for you then good for you.

Bottom of the pile in last years JD Power Survey. Avoid, unless it gives you warm sensations in the your pants!

I drove one of the new Discoverys the other day, and all i can say is it was FANTASTIC to drive.

Never been a 4x4 fan, but it was lovely .

According to top gear survey and JD power survey they are the worst car on sale in the UK.
Build is crap, reliability is crap and the vast majority of owners said they would never buy another.

I would look elsewhere.

My brother in-law has one and I quite like it. His is a 2001 270CDi, I don't know where it was made, and he’s owned it from new and done about 45K. It has had absolutely nothing go wrong with it, the build quality is fine and not significantly different from the rest of the Merc range of that age.

Just an alternative view, mind you I’m weird when it comes to liking cars, as I like the Impreza as well

Residuals not bad either, probably still worth about 20K now, was 36K new.

We wewre given one by my father in law (ML320) and sold it to buy a VW Sharan which was miles better for our use. The ML was a bit of a guzzler (18 mpg !) and not that fast, not much to recommend it really.

Been thinking about it tonight & i think the ML could be in my sights

It looks good & i cant afford 30k for an X5 so poor mans it is

Having just bought a kinda semi rural house it might just do the trick & the neighbours might like it

Just to add, I’ve driven an 04 model off road..........intentionally Can't compare this aspect to X5 or Disco, however it seemed very capable, wheel articulation is impressive. Felt very strong and didn't give the impression it was going to break easily.

I like the look of them. Not heard anything good about them, I have heard most of the comments above, build quality, depeciation, etc.

Have a look at the Volvo XC90 before buying, IMHO a better car.

My cousin had the insperation model and it was a really nice car I thought. It was sold purely due to missing a performance car.
The new Disco looks OK from the front but the back !!! WTF is going on there then ? I would want to overtake it at any opertunity just so I didnt have to look at a rear end like that !
