Question

Hi All,

Another car on my last of maybe's is the previous shape S class Mercedes.

An example from Top Marques:

Mercedes 500 SE 1993, K reg, silver, full Mercedes service history, superb original condition, fully loaded, door closers, black leather, polished alloys, £9500.

This is an awful lot of car for the money.

I remember my mate at the Mercedes dealer saying that if the cylinder head gasket goes on the V6 model (S280 or S320) it costs about £800 to put right. If, however, it goes on the V8/V12 model, you are looking at around £3500.

Now, as I know nothing about engines, I am wondering whether this cost is simply made up of labour, or is it parts as well?, i.e. when a cylinder head gasket goes pop, what needs replacing?

I am [fairly] comfortable with the £800 quid bit, but not sure if I could stomach the £3500.

But say, for example, a Mercedes specialist could fix the V8/V12 model for, say £1500, then I might be tempted into the larger engine model.

If, however, major new parts are going to be needed then these would obviously need to come from Mercedes (so no saving there) but I would expect to pay a much lower hourly rate for the work from the Mercedes specialist.

Get my drift?

Cheers,

C

Ummmmmmm I dont see why the V12 is so much. The V12 is made of two M104 I6 heads.... so if one goes, you're looking at the cost of an E320 head. From what I know, the accss on the V12s is easy.

Not a clue on the V8s, but I dont see why so expensive.

Nice car.. go for it :-)
