Brief:

£1,000 to get a car on the track, hot hatch style nothing *serious*

I reckon I could pickup a Mk2 golf 16v for around £500, bolt in cage for £200 (used), £150 cheap bucket seat & 3 point harness (used) = £850 + £150 on tax, plugs, etc... bits and pieces to sort any niggles.

1k, assuming the car had at least some MOT I'm off.

A day spent ripping the headlining, seats, door cards etc.

139BHP & If it gets out of shape & I wrap it.. panels very cheap to replace and indeed to re-shell once I've invested in my cage & seat.

This seems a cheap entrance albeit I've got to pickup a helmet

Now this is a strict'ish budget... 205's look good but golf still appeals.

Any of you selling such a trackday weapon please PM me or indeed stick your coments down here.

Well mine's a 205 Mi16 with Emerald ECU and GSXR throttle bodies, Magnex, Ferodo, Corbeau seats and more, but thats cost considerably more than £1k, try 3.5 times that and it doesnt even have an engine yet

Rebuilt engine is another £1500 on top of that

I've spent a lot more than 1K in the past on *projects* but this time I'm forcing myself to make sure I only spend the 1k... I simply want to acheive a track car I can afford to loose if it all goes pear shaped... then again throttle bodies would be nice... more supportive seats... more padded 5 harness... polycarb windows... must.. resi..s..t... the...v...o...ice..s....

Had a few track days in the XR2's - good laugh and cheap too. Fully preped on ebay for not too much.

It depends on what you want but I suggest you will struggle for £1,000 unless your willing to use the standard seat, no harness and no cage ....... You know the sort of thing, buy it, give it a bit of a service strip it, fit decent pads and off you go.
When you start talking cage, seat / subframe / a bit more go etc etc the money starts to add up.

Mk2 golf would be a good starting point though as would a pug or XR2

Cheap bucket seat & runners... £150 should net that.
6 point cage been quoted £350
Harness 3 point - £70 max with fixings
Base car albeit rough £500 - £600

Padgid fast road pads £30, cross drilled discs £50, 5.1 brake fluid £5, oil, £10, filter..£5, plugs £10...

Ok.. so were talkin £1,200... think I should be able to do it. Certainly will not be a struggle IMHO.

I really think with an OK base. F plate... not talking H/J 90's spec rollout model just a tatty old 16v...

Anyone else up for the challenge? Might be a laugh trying to locate the car & bits.... any assistance on this one appreicated.

Hmmm perhaps the bushes & shocks are shot.... even a cheesy Chav gti might at least have *uprated* Shocks / Springs.. just need to have a search

Again any pointers to cheap on budget cars would be great

You might have something made for £1200 but I bet within the first 2 or 3 track days the cost has gone up to about £2K.

Why, please elaborate..

I can see the tires getting minced, the pads getting minced etc.. I think it's doable, ok If I go off... maybe a new strut... £20 from Euro Car Parts.. new wing £12... bonnet £40... Really if the shell gets mangled I'll just re-shell.

Don't get me wrong I have and do spend considerably more on other vehicles. Not trying to start a *flaming* session here, simply want structured arguments from those more experienced members, indeed I may be mistaken but my intention is a cheap fun track car for a few events.

Why would I have to spend the £800 more?

would have been nice if it was the GSi Turbo.....you can pick a tatty one of them up for less than a grand...albeit requiring some suspenders for a track car

in my limited trackday experience you will get overtaken by most cars and may even get in the way in a car that lets face is not fast, golf gti. how about little car/big engine i.e. nova with the common 16v engine transplant, less than 1k plenty of pace.

My friend is selling a nova on a k plate. 1.5 diesel, but that could go. Wants about 200 quid for it, bit of rot in the rear wings but has the panels to go in. He could also source bigger engine, better suspension for you. But i still think the pug 205 is a good one, or maybe an old 106 xsi?

Your theory is correct, but lets say you buy a Golf 16v for £500. I can gaurantee within the first few hundred miles you will have some mechanical costs. Even my mint 205 needed £200 for a new alt and battery once I got her back from London.

You will probably need other items such as rad, driveshafts etc, then some new suspension stuff, even std.

I bought a mint 205, absolutely mint but with a dodgy engine. Even so, the general consumables added up to £998 or something within the first 12 months.

I'm not saying its impossible to do on a £1k budget, but fear that 6 months down the line it will have cost more.

Yes I dare say the CV's will be under a bit more stress than usual on an old sh1tter, a £500 16v will be a *sh1tter*. I don't mind spending on the upkeep and lets be honest... a mk2 is not expensive.. an alternator £60.. used.. breakers still have lots of bits lying around or Euro can supply pretty much most items.

The point is... to deliver a £1,000 car on the track. I think it is doable and for me the 16v offers a great package. The 205... a friend had a Mi16 with an Ecosse Supercharger... yes it did go well but felt like I was rattling around in a half full box of celebrations filled with rusty nails.. the golf... the same tin of rusty nails but with a more Germanic quality ..

No seriously I would consider a pug also...

It's fair to say that the XR2, Nova, Astra etc all offer great packages... however FWD.....

Iv'e been going to the auctions this opens up lots of cars id not been thinking of tonights sale ford probe 2.0 £600 toyota celica 20i gt tatty £600 hoda civic coupe 1.6 big dent in wing £400 honda prelude coupe 2.2 £850 all a little difrant but all good cars in there own way but im still waiting for the right one

Cool, lI understand everyone feels differently about my goal but to me I'm making the budget... I CAN do more but like the idea of forcing myself to deliver within the 1k budget.

Tell me do you see many 200sx's or other Jap RWD items go through... ?

not at the mo iv'e been to 4 sales in the last 2 weeks and not seen any but you might go next week and see 2 or 3
on a more positive note i did buy a mondeo td last week and sold it today and made myself another £200 to ad to my budget

It depends where your £1,000 starts and ends. If your saying a grand to get a car to your first event then yeah £1,000 will do it. Doggy 205 £500, second hand cage £200 seat and subframe £150, full set of pads £80, harness £35. There you have it, track car for £1,000.
Then however the liklehood is your tyres will be mix and match shixtters so budget £160 for a cheap set of half decent tyres. The suspension wont be up to much so £400 (ish), you will fancy strut braces £80. We are of course assuming the car runs and keeps running. You will be better off assuming about £400 in the first 6 months for service parts such as £40 oil change every two months, air filter, plugs, leads, fluids, plus parts which will go wrong with a 15 year old 100,000 mile hot hatch.

I stand by my comment, a cheap £1,000 track car will end up costing about £2K after the first 6 months.

ps ...... it doesn't mean it isn't great fun building such a car because it is, but go in with your eyes wide open
