Anyone owned a Seat Leon Cupra 'R'??
Hi people,
I'm looking for a new car, need a change from the 206 Dturbo which has been run as a cheap car for 18 months. I've been looking seriously at a brand new Cupra R. Been to a dealer, and without too much negotiation, managed to get him from the £18050 RRP to £16800. To me, it seems like a 'lot of bank per buck' when you are getting a 225Bhp powerplant, Brembo 4 pots and 18" rims all as standard. They look a nice car, and I'm getting to test drive it next Saturday to see what I think. Anyone else owned one/been in one, and what do you think????
Proby.

I picked mine up a little less than 2 weeks ago, 4 month old and saved a fortune on list. so far very impressed, has lots of go from low down the rev range in all the gears (even 6th pulls quite nicely from 40 - 50). not had it long enough to really be objective though.
sticks nicely to the road through the twisties. only things i've thought on the negative are that the steerings a bit vague when your really pressing on and the car can struggle for traction in the dry and the wet can be a nightmare at times.
build quality seems fine although i dont think theres been time for too much to rattle loose just yet.
gear box is a peach (IMHO).
cant think of owt else at the mo, but if i can answer any ?? i will.

too difficult for me as i havent owned or driven one. sorry mate the only answer to that is drive both back to back and see which you prefer.
cost wise i think the leon will be better, mpg, poss lower insurance etc.. although my choices came to, civic, leon or new golf GTI.
between those three i found the golf probably the best of the bunch but very expensive in the first place (23,500 with options) and quoted a poss 5 month waiting list.
civic was good for a thrash but could see myself driving about on the red line day in day out and having to thrash it to get the performance.
basically the leon was best suited to my driving style and i got a good deal from the stealer.

An LCR will pull a few car lengths on a WRX blobeye at around 70mph upwards. My boss has a standard WRX and ive had many blasts with him.
Ive had the car jabba remapped now (273bhp/290lbft) and he's a blip in the rear view mirror. All for £500
I think they look fantastic, with a lot of road presence. The car in black looks fantastic with the 18's and brembos as standard. The car has a lot of toys and the cabin is comfy

mitchy, i've been looking at a poss remap. looked at the usual suspects (AMD, JABBA and REVO). all similar prices, all similar gains, what made you swing for jabba?
also, post remap, whats the character of the car now? i.e. traction, is there now a narrower powerband? fuel consumption etc... can the remap be traced? i.e. notify the ins company or seat themselves in the case of warranty claims?
lots of ?? i know mate also did you change the DV at the same time?
once i have some disposable again this is a definite on the of things to get.
cheers in advance mate.
p.s. sorry for the thread hijack

Well I went from an original shape Scooby to a Cupra (not an 'R')... Great build quality, everything shuts with a reassuring thud. Only ever had a run-in with a wrx once, and once on the move, there was nothing in it. However, pick this up on Friday
So once it's remapped, I can start baiting some STi's

Agree with Cupramax, I would look at Revo before anything else. I actually have a LCR 225 with an APR remap on it, but i won it in a competition so was not about to say "hell no".
Remap has made my car a beast, pulls harder in every gear, and the fuel consumption at motorway speeds has not been affected at all. Can still get 360-380 miles on a tank of Optimax driving up and down the M6.....

I have a Cupra R. I think it has advantages over the WRX in most areas, except the 4-wheel drive and the awesome ability of the WRX's suspension to cope with crappy road surfaces. Mid range acceleration is better than the WRX, and I had a drag race with a '53 STi this morning to quite a high speed (private road of course) and it was neck and neck (I caught him slightly unawares from the lights, and got a car length in front, which probably cancelled out the 4-wheel drive launch advantage). Not had the R chipped yet, but certainly thinking about Revo.
Great forum guys.

There is indeed a video of a Jabba vs Revo car up santapod dragway.
Both get fairly good launches and then the Jabba car just pulls and pulls.
I opted for jabba as the power and torque is more sustained than the revo map and i 100% believe this would show on the road as it done in the video up santapod raceway. The Revo map tails off around 5800Rpm. I go right up to 6500rpm before changing up on mine with no noticable loss in performance.
I also opted for jabba as they do a before and after run on the rollers and fine tweak the car for around 3 1/2 hours. Revo do it in around 20 minutes and most dealers have no rolling road facilities.
The jabba map is suited for the individual car, a revo map is not. A Revo map is a generic LCR map and that's it.
Jabba can be adjusted on the move through a boost controller. Revo only offer a plug and play dongle, where the car engine needs to be switched off in order to load the new map. Jabba is almost instantaneously.
Revo had a 140mph brick wall problem, although a new code is now out which sorts that out. Ive never heard anything negative about the jabba maps.
Jabba are also VAG 1.8t specialists and do the IHI conversions. Revo are not 1.8T specialists and do not do big turbo conversions.
Good points for Revo are, there's a good few dealers around the country and can be booked and done within a week. Jabba only have 1 dealership in peterborough and the wait can be as long as 3 months.
My money would go jabba everytime, more so because the time and care element with fine tweaking of the car. There are a few people on seatcupra.net that wish they had gone jabba over revo, but none from jabba to revo. There's even been 1 guy who forked out for a jabba remap as he disliked his initial revo map.
Ive not heard much about AMD, apart from the power/torque figures are a tad lower than the jabba and revo maps.
As to the cars performance, i kept with an M3 to silly speeds from 3rd gear onwards. The first 2 gears are difficult to control if you plant the foot, it takes a bit of time getting used to.
Fuel economy seems to be actually better, as there is no need to drop down from 6th now to get anywhere. 6th gear after a remap is unbelievably torquey so no real need to drop down.

Thanks all for some great info/posts. I used to run a WRX a few years ago, great to know some peeps have owned both and their comments are interesting. I'm sure I can get more discount, after the test drive, I will barter more and more. I'm at the moment playing two dealers off against one another. They BOTH obviously want to sell me a new car.

they are pretty stonking cars tbh, the wet hurts them pretty hard tho, on greasy roads its disco-light dashboard even in 3rd gear!
A chipped LCR will give a scoob some serious headaches at everything except the actual launch.
Oh and the first "mod" even before a re-map would be to get rid of those awful p-zeroes that come with the car, they have naff-all grip on the wet.

I too have owned a LCR (APR chipped)! clocked 53K miles in her and it has been the best alround car I have owned. It does everything so well out of the box.
-
poor traction (but you can master it to a certain degree) Never gonna match a scoob though.
bit of inital body roll then sorts itself out
most people have never heard of it so don't think it's any good being a SEAT!
crashy over bumps
dosen't sound like my Scoob...
Chews tyres/pads/discs
+
Very fast once moving (even STI PPP will not pull much on one of these when chipped)
lots of toys and a decent stereo system
Not many people have heard of them!!
Loves motorways. you can cruise all day in these.
you can get insurance without having to sell body parts to pay for it.
cheap services
I have had to buy a WRX STI PPP to move up!

Well, I took one for a blast yesterday (standard 'R') and must admit, I was very very impressed. The thing felt so heavy, solid and planted to the road. The engine sounded sweet, and it pilled like a steam train! I'm thinking about buying one thats 12 months old now, rather than new. Just think it makes more sense after looking at s/hand values, and I will still have 2 years warrany left to run. Many thanks for all the input, and this test drive certainly made my mind up. Roll on the arrival of the black beast!!!!!

One for REVO here, straight line they are rapid and on a par with a wrx sti once remapped. Obviously no chance from a standing start but unless traffic light grand prixs are your thing then they can suprise a lot of cars.
