Default What 4x4 ????

My mate has been looking to get a decent 4x4 for a while but he hasnt really & cant decided what one to go for

So i am after some pointer to give him basically he has got 20k to spend & would like to have something with maybe some warranty left on it, must be diesel & have a fair bit of torque for some of his equipment he pulls

He said

Nissan X Trail
Toyota Rav4 (is it 4wd)
Discovery
Freelander
Shogun Sport

I said

Discovery
Shogun
Shogun Sport
1999 - 2000 Range Rover

So whats everyone views & do any of the above have bad points

Cheers

Stephen

I have a diesel Rav4. Yes it's permanent 4wd, but I wouldn't say it has much torque - brochure says 250Nm (Is that about 170lb/ft in UK currency?).

800 quid buys a Toyota-warranted chip that puts it up to 150bhp and appropriate torque.

It also has no low-ratio box, if he's serious.

All I know is it drives OK and has never gone wrong in 2 years, apart from the reversing sensor. I bought it as an MPV not a jeep, I don't need anything hardcore (or wannabe hardcore).

Forget the Freelander too many warrenty / reliability issues with them
Would personal be a bit dubious of the 99 - 00 Range rover (much as I like them) electrics / massive bills when they go wrong
Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol

X-Trail for me. Consistently wins reviews and is a "real" 4wd. The 2.2 diesel is supposed to be a good motor too.

A discovery is good but can you get a new one for 20k? If so then that changes things...

You'd pick up an early 3.0i X5 with some miles on it for a touch over £20K nowadays, but for the job I reckon the Disco is best bet

SWB LandCruiser - you can get them MY00-02 for that price, I just looked on autotrader. 3.0 diesel will pull a lot more than a RAV4.
