Default Citroen hydraulics problem.

Recently bought a Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD for travelling to work and back. Didn't pay much for it as I haven't bought it for looks.

2 problems:-

1. Heater blowers don't work. This is ok when the car is warm and moving as air is forced into the cockpit. It was frosty one morning last week and it took ages for me to de-mist it.
I've looked at the fuse which seem to be ok.

2. Its like a water bed when on the move as the slightest dip in the road lifts me out of my seat! Plus when driving over speed bumps the back nearside is very rigid!
Any ideas?

Thanks

Nick

PS - I know you get what you pay for bla blah. Just after advice on the above faults onder2:

Is the rear suspension uneven and showing a lot of negative camber on the poor side? If so its your radius arm bearings; a b*stard specialist job @ £150 - £200.

On tickover does the suspension constantly adjust itself and 'tick'? This will be the sphere on the front of the engine. Is it losing LHM, have you checked the level? I will probably only need new spheres on each corner otherwise.

Thanks for the response guys. I can hear a ticking sound and the car does take a while to level. I've heard of these spheres. What exactly are they and how much are replacements? I guess I'd have to have all 4 replaced (assuming they are in each corner).

I have a Knackered Xantia dumped out back at work...the cost of sorting the suspension is more than the car is worth. Seems like a good car too (for a ****reon).

From a source: Get the spheres recharged for £100ish as it's likely they've gone hard. Whilst you're at that, get the LHM (green gunk) hydraulic system flushed and re-filled with clean fluid.

Re. the electrics, if it doesn't work at all, try replacing the switch first.

Actually, I've just looked at prices on WWW.ANDYSPARES.COM New sphere prices don't seem bad. Unless there's a major catch to replacing them....

Spheres are fairly easy to change, from memory theres a bolt somewhere you have to un do to release the pressure in the system before you do it.

I had an ex auntie for about 3 years as a runner for work & despite being the car it was it never let me down.

If you are hampshire based I know a good independant Citroen specialist. mail me on jenkins414@aol.com if you need details

Have a look heree for all the answers to your Citroen queries. If the guys in this forum can't help, I'll eat my hat.. http://www.andyspares.com/discussionforum/

As for your specific queries, I suspect your reostat/switch for the heater fan has failed, and I'm certain your rear suspension spheres are knackered, having had the same thing on a Xantia of mine in the past......

For advice on how to repair things, again look at the above forum, they'll have the answer. Oh, and please search the forum for answers before posting a question on how to replace spheres, trust me its been covered in depth many times before....

The fifth 'accumulator' sphere can be the most important; it looks like a normal green suspension sphere and its mounted on the front of the engine in the centre. Change this if the car constantly 'ticks' whilst you are stationary and ticking over.

The radius arm bearings are a nightmare job as I mentioned earlier; to check simply put the car in normal or high ride and squat down and look at the car from about 5 -10 yards away. If you can see a measure of negative camber on one side then its time to bite the bullet; the bearings will cost about £60 from a French car parts specialist and its definately a specialist job to swap them.... As I said before, if the RABs are OK then swapping all 5 spheres and the LHM (7? on a Xantia) should make it better.
