Default Evo 4 Ownership

OK toying with the possibility of trading in the Scoob for an Evo4. Now I know there will be plenty of owners out there who will say to go for a 5 or 6 etc etc, but a 4 would allow me to trade without having to put lots of £'s into the deal and I really do like the shape

So I have read the usual blurb on the Evo 4 via lancer register and evo.net but wondered as to whether there are any members on here who have owned one and what they thought of it ?

All views welcome.....

Thanks

Before reading your thread, i have exactly the same thought..was thinking of an Evo 5, but after i had a chat with the insurance company..that thought went straight out of the window! £3000!

Bad news SamUK but as Matt says might be worth changing insurers - the 4 will work out the same to insure as my MY00 WRS with PPP.

Any other views etc ?

I read years ago that the 4 was the most agressive model anyway

Not so mate. If you can afford it go for a V, different pistons, rods, turbo, block. wider track, different struts, better brakes. And where as the 1V can only really take 330ish bhp on standard internals the V will easily take 360+bhp. All in all you would be better spending more getting a V than trying to upgrade a 1V. That said a good 1V is better than a bad V and, it will still keep you smiling

So am I correct in thinking that the 4 has a weak power plant ?? I am not really wanting to buy an Evo and invite trouble Much as I would like to be in the position to buy a 5 as I have mentioned previously I was looking to trade in the Scoob buy an Evo4 and hopefully not have to put any additional £'s into the deal.

A few people have had crankwalk with the 4.
A lot of people have also had no problems with the 4. Are you looking to get more power from the engine?

Oh yes that as well!! But I think it's a bit like the Scoob problem of No 4 piston, The myth is worse than the truth!!!

No 4 piston What are you talking about
One tuner alone has replaced 10 engines due to crankwalk

Yeh of course he has!!! And how many scoob engines have been trashed cuss of the piston problem??? or the small crank journal problem? Or the faulty maf sensor problem.........should I go on?? I didn't post to get into a "which car is more reliable argument" I posted cuss the lad asked for a bit of advice on the suitability of an Evo 1V!! I was merely pointing out a few possible problems, and that, like all car related faults, they are not always going to happen on every car.

I prefer the looks of the (right) 4, I also managed to come accross one at the right time which has a rebuilt Evo 6 engine fitted (along with many other parts, power engineering ecu, tubular exh manifold, avcr, tommi makinen turbo, uprated fuel pump, fpr, HKS suction kits, 3" exhaust ap clutch RS suspension, evo 5 wheels, etc etc).

As I said I like the 4's (mostly because I don't like the rear arch extensions on the 5's and 6's, I like the front but something's not right about the plastic rear arch extensions).

What lets the 4 down in my opinion (apart from the lesser engine) is the 16" wheels and sky high suspension. Mine is really low for an Evo and has the 17" wheels from the 5 and looks great IMO.

The later engines really seem to be strong (especially coming from the scooby world), I'm told mine will quite happily take 1.6bar with my mods. You'll find a huge percentage of 5 and 6 owners are circa 350+bhp reliably.

Only problem I've had with mine has been noisey lash adjusters (got some uprated ones coming) and the AYC making a noise (had it flushed and changed which sorted it, having it done again just to make sure it's 100% clean).

Chill out a bit
Piston 3 is the problem one

There is no point in saying to him the evo 4 engine is fine when there are known problems with it

Thanks for all the input guys but I think having read what you have stated and what I have read on other Evo forums I will just stick with what I've got for the time being
