Went and picked up my new Pug 205 1.9 GTI today and I really had forgotten how much fun they are

Too dark to take photos now but will do in the morning, the odd bit that needs sorting out but overall im chuffed

Well it's going to be my daily driver for the next year at least so nothing drastic, I did mention that big weight reductions are to be had by removing little bits here and there but SWMBO says thats not happening ... we'll see how it goes

No I went from an 18 month old Brabus Smart car to a 14 year old 205 GTI, the change of pace is startling to say the least

It's certainly more basic if you're used to a new car. The smart had air con, heated leather seats, electric everything but I was bored of it!

The 205 is basic but thats half the charm, its just fun fun fun

I have done around 12,000 miles in mine in the last year, including 2 trips to the nurburgring and a few uk circuits ..other than a new radiator and a couple of bits and pieces at MOT time she has been good as gold. Loads of fun and cheap as chips to run. Full set of A539's for £140. Costs me more than that for one on the scoob ...

As mentioned the key word is fun. You have so much fun in them you don't have time to think about much else! I personally find mine fine considering it was designed in the 80's...........

I have always found the brakes on mine pretty good. Standard disks, at least i think they are are ferrodo DS2500 pads. I have thought about better brakes before but the fellas that are on it now seem to work pretty well as they are.

The brakes are fine unless you subject them to the most intense track use, so they can't be bad since yours have survived the ring!

ATE Powerdiscs and DS2500 will give pretty darn good performance. Stainless hoses and racing fluid always helps too..........

Good thing about the ring is that other than some heavy 120mph down to 70mph stuff I dont have to brake tooooo much, its more about closing your eyes and believing the car will make the bend without touching the middle pedal.
The DS2500's have been to the ring twice and done around 6,000 miles in total and stiff feel fine. They will need changing before next season starts. In fairness I think I will replace them with the same again.

Re braking, the 205 is light enough to not need mega brakes. As Jawa's, mine has ATE discs and DS2500 pads - works fine, even under heavy braking.

maybe i was unlucky with mine then, when i bought my 205 first the brakes were a deathtrap

So these are in now, completely OTT, but then i am going big power early next year

I have tarox disks on the Mi16 which i bought off ebay for £50.

I'm using standard calipers with Mintex 1166 pads front and rear.

I have to say I really expected the brakes to be crap, but for the dozen or so trackdays I've done since I sold the Clio Cup race car I haven't had any fade whatsoever. My home circuit is Oulton, which is notoriously heavy on brakes, and I get up to Croft a lot, but I've never had any probs at all with my cheap and cheerful braking setup!

I went to a tarmac rally a couple of weeks ago with loads of 205's there. A good few of them were running Mintex 1166 pads so they cant be bad for sure. Mind you they were also running Formula 2 tyres and ive heard good and bad things about those.

I need something sticky for next years sprint championship- tried with normal track slicks but it's all over before they even think about warming up.

RRH it depends if you are limited on what your allowed to run?

If they need to be road legal then the dunlop DO1J (or whatever they are called) seem favourite but expensive. Then it seems to be Yoko's or maybe the new Toyo 888???
For me I cant justify spending £400 on a set of track tyres for the old girl so I will either buy second hand cup racing tyres or stick with my Yoko A539's at £140 a set. Not the best but cheap enough not to worry when you destroy them.
Did think about the Formula 2's but talking to the techy guys they said they wouldnt work on the 'ring' ........

no point spending decent money on track oriented tyres, unless you have track oriented suspension, specifically negative camber. Otherwise ure not getting the most out of the tyres

Ok my 205 sages . Yet another question.

I picked up a 1.6 GTi yesterday, primarily for everyday use, with the occasional track day. I'm thinking about a couple off tweeks (nothing to extreme). Can you recommend a good exhaust that may release a few more ponies? I'm looking for a legal one, as I don't won't to go through the hassle of getting it swapped over come MOT time (unlike the Scoob ). Also, is it worth sticking in a new air filter, if so, which one?

What sort of prices are we talking about.

Not convinced what the best exhaust and filter is to be honest. Something like a magnex and a K&N will do the trick. Dont expect it to make much difference in power though, it will be louder though for sure . As for price probably something like £250.

You can get a few BHP by advancing the ignition a few degrees though. Made 6bhp difference to mine for £30.

IMHO the best way to get the most out of your car without going mad is to as you said an exhaust and filter, to make it sound the part, then spend a few quid on good suspension and decent brake pads. For not tooooo much money you now have a reasonable powered car which will give good all round entertainment.

If you want to be more hardcore than its time for a new cam, carbs or an engine transplant .... then you have to strip and cage it with buckets etc ........

If you want to be totally mental you start scraping the paint off to reduce weight ....

As it is now it will upset a few cars on track and give you more smiles per miles than most new cars .......

the OE exhaust is proven to be an excellent item, unfortunately it looks like a pea shooter.

filter and exhaust mods do VERY little to a 205. In fact 9 times out of 10 you'll lose power. The standard items are very good! I just put a magnex backbox on mine as this doesn't change much at all, though if I were to recommend any exhaust it would be the full Magnex including manifold, should see a few bhp - not much mind for the cost. K&N does nothing though I did find mine is a bit more responsive on the throttle..........

Oh, and one of the best things I fitted - adjustable quickshift - its superb, it was like rowing with the standard throw!

A buddy and I bought a 1.6 a couple of years back for a bit of a laugh
... excellent fun. But we now also have a 309 GTI, 205 MI16 and are
in the process of getting another MI16 engine rebuilt to go in the
original 1.6

... great fun but can be a slippery slope !!

I have been buying ex-cup tyres from Protyre at £90 a set, but they're a race tyre and tend to warm up too slowly. They don't need to be road legal due to the class I run in.

4 degrees neg on the front. kills wheel bearings unfortunately.
