Selling my pug 405 sri due to needing a cheap runabout when i go back to uni next year. thinking about getting a rover 414i. don't give a crap about looks etc, what i need to know is



how much till fill a tank up?

how far does a tank take u in urban driving + motorway driving

Watch out as the 'k' series engine eats headgaskets and worst case cylinder head/top edge of the block!!!!(gear boxes are also a weak point and windows tend to drop out of the channels too often......)
TBH you would be better off buying a cheaper Jap car...Nissan/Honda/Toyota as they are a bit more reliable.

i had a 414si on a J plate a few years back, the single point injection twin cam (honda developed i believe).
personally i think it was a great engine in a pretty good allround motor.
as i remember it would do just anout 350ish miles on a tank with a mixture of diving.
gear box was sweet on mine all the way to 100k plus. reliability was also spot on. the only down side was a serious level of understreer should you decide to get frantic. (i was young then)

I had no probs with my 414sli H plate. I was a student and the only costs to me were two new fronts and a £70 home service. Great car, loads of space and super thrifty too. Personally go for the 214sei instead. I think the 1.4 does struggle with the 400 series.

I had a 414 on a H reg a bit ago, great little car if you want something cheap and cheerful I suppose. I used it as a work hack to shove loads of miles on and abuse cracking little 1.4 engine, about 350 miles on a tank and about £32 to fill it up. I had no problems apart from going through brake pads and disk's and tyres trying to drive it around corners the same as the Evo LOL. Tony

Not bad cars, much nicer than the equivalent Ford Escort which are horrid to drive, the engine is willing but they make 104 bhp and horsepower is never free, if you use the extra power (compared to the Ford) it will only do about 29 to the gallon but 40 is possible if you are careful. The headgasket thing isnt a myth either so do the checks for oil in the coolant and vice versa.

Looks like i think i will give the rover 414 a miss, what i am thinking about is getting a pug 405 1.9 diesel. According to parkers they do between 40-44 mpg. and they seem pretty damn cheap 2. One on 80k phase 2 model is ony 600-700 quid. My 2.0 sri pug 405 does 350 to a tank good and around 250 urban. so im wondering does anyone know what i should see from a pug 405 diesel?

Mate had the Pug, lasted 150,000 mile until the Head Gasket went, great car all in all, just wasnt worth repairing, only worth 200 quid so he scrapped it and bought a 406 so they come highly recommended.

Isn't the Rover 420 diesel a Peugeot lump? Citroen ZX diesels are very very cheap and surprisingly long-lasting, a mate just picked a TD up for £450 in very good nick inside and out.

He reckons 45mpg easy.

think ill go for a pug 405, get a phase 2 one as i have a phase 2 sri atm and i love it, i know diesel will be slower than petrol but it will be cheaper to run and its all about the savings. just heard to much bad stuff about rovers, also parents had pug 405 which lasted till 180 k
