Question Celica GT4 (96 model or thereabouts)

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has experianced them, especially in comparison to a uk turbo impreza classic shape 97.

On the face of it they seam v interesting - only draw backs on paper at least are weight and lack of a decent sound track! - is this the case?

Thanks

I bought a 94 WRC Ltd edition (No ABS, Big wing), from japan, with a 310BHP chip, filter and exhaust, regret ever selling it. To drive fast easily you would choose an impreza, but if you take it by the horns and rag dolly it, it was by far the best car I've ever owned. Put 18" Superleggera's on it and it looked the mutt's nutts, everyone loved it. I have to go now as I'm about to start crying

standard gt4 (jap spec) (mine) is a little quicker than a standard uk scooby (my mates)

does weigh a little more as said - 1235 (scooby) v 1380 (gt4)

plus point, u go out for a 10 mile drive and see around 20 scoobys, u dont see 1 GT4

See quite a few ST205s round here, which is nice as I love em.

If they didn't hold their value so well I'd have one (around 6-7 grand I reckon for a nice 94/95 uk example).

Still, they were about 30k brand new iirc.

Standard ST205 is 240 BHP, 0-60 in 6.2 is usually quoted, quarter mile will be more like 14.5 I'd have thought. Fair match for a Scoob of similar age. Unlike Scoobs the JDM model is exactly same engine output (barring the few additional horses running on 100 octane). Damm fine motor, post '96 facelift gives few more modern touches, nicer lights, etc, only drawback when I was looking was the number around with no ABS or passenger airbag, generally on the 94's & 95's where it was an option on the JDM's (standard on UK cars though). Sadly the last of the line up to '99 in Japan can't be imported, if they could I would for sure...

www.gt4oc.net

Great cars IMO... better built than a Classic Scoob.

A few friends have them, quick cars from standard and very quick with very little mods.

Went to the GT4 Challenge Weekend in York/Elvington and the full range from Standard to the Fensport Demo Cars were there!!

Cheers,
Grant

How come? IIRC as long as you get or use a model report and the cars standard there's no problem.

Even better, Elephant quoted me 500 quid to insure one next year, less than a scooby by quite a bit. nice

Have got a '94 WRC ...& have had it about 3 years now & had a standard ST205 for 3 years before that

Few figures, 1360-1380kg is dry weight ...they're about 1480 kerb

The clips ive seen from 'best motoring' have 5.7 to 60 & a 13.8 1/4 ...& top out @ the 140-150 mark, dependant on how much wing you're running

Sadly ill be getting rid of mine in the new year ...partly due to patter of tiny feet, partly due to fancying a change after 6 years ...hence moving on to an RA

I spoke to Miguel at Newrea about getting me a '99 model (HID lights etc), said they could not import post '96 models of the GT-4, can't remember the exact reason now, may have been as there is no model report (although why that would be the case for just the later 'facelift' i don't know)...

Still, as soon as someone gets one it can be done. If someone wants one bad enough theyll pay the 1 or 2k it costs for one so they can bring one over.
Probably no model report as most imported models will be old enough to not need one.

My point was, its not that you can't ge tone, it's that it'll cost you a bit more

I saw a 99 one just before model reports came in for about 10k, not bad at all seeing as about 4 years earlier it would have been just over 31!

ST205 is a very rapid, well handling car even in standard form.
Price new was up as far as £32,500 at one point. Relative rarity means you can park them on the street every night with no fear of it being stolen because nobody knows what they are! This also helps when you get people who think its just a 4wd GTi... till you blow them away Insurance is cheap, again due to rarity and lack of theft.
Prices tumbling now.. a clean ST205 is from 5k upwards.

I have to wonder about that....AFAIA it's a Common misconceptrion - the ST205 is actually 100kg lighter than the 185 & that has a curb weight of about 1380 kg's. Might see if I can find some REAL results of one's people have weighed

Cheers

I think on the WRC version, they could have deleted the air vent at the bottom of the steering column, it only blew air between your legs, completely useless. Come to think of it, I only noticed it every time I got in the car after the wife had been driving it!?!?!

A friend of mine has a black ST205 and he loves it. I have driven it and, although I did enjoy it, it felt less nimble than my MY00. I have spent money on the handling of mine but the GT4 certainly felt heavier and less willing to change direction.

As for the noise - he has a Nur Spec R bolted underneath so it is fairly vocal.

On paper the ST205 is 68 litre tank, ive never got over 60 litres in it though.
ST185 was the heaviest version, ST205 is 1380kg.

Dry weight ...which is still 100kg more than a 94-99 Scoobs Kerb weight (1250kg) ...dont see a scoobs dry weight too often, but must be around the 1150kg mark!!! ...might explain those door dings!

I've always looked at these, they do seem to get over looked, which is actually a good thing, cause they're normally reasonably priced. Like people have said the UK spec ones are pretty cheap, but you can get really good imports too. Wicked cars.
