Question 205 transplant questions.

I have a nice old 1.6GTi, F reg been in the family since new and fast approaching 130,000 miles. Engine now a little smokey, and gearbox been getting worse for last 20k+ etc.

Recently I have been offered a donor 309GTi with recent gearbox and lowish milage engine. Now to the question: It would be far easier to do a complete engine/gaerbox/suspension pransplant, so as the engine and gearbox are identical (as makes any differance as far as I know) is the track the same? I think the wishbones are interchanagable as are the suspension, but the 1.9 has larger wheelbearings and driveshafts (which would be handy for future power up grades). Don't need or want the powersteering off it so no problem there and similarly on the 309 there seems to be no oil cooler in the radiator to worry about. Wonder what else may be worth scavenging too?

Answers, comments, pitfalls, and suggestions all very welcome.

cheers all

Easy change, plus use the rear beam too, gives slightly wider rear track!

Cheer Scoobyjawa I'll try that.

Another question for 205 owners. Do 1.9's run with differant oil pressuer to 1.6's? If so is it due to sender location or a differant spring in the pressure relief etc?

I ask because my 1.6 runs half a merk from the top most of the time and deops jsut below the middle when idling and hot. The 1.9 that I'm looking at seems not to go much above the middle adn the same seemed to be true of my previous 1.9's some years ago. Any thoughts?

The 1.9 has a sump spacer on about 1" thick to compensate for longer conrods, thus giving more volume inside the block and lower oil pressure. As long as its above the 2nd white bar (IIRC) then it should be fine.

^^ What he said!

My 1.9 sits around middle, perhaps just over and drops a bit when idling.
