scooby has to go - advice on tdi
I've got to get rid of my MY97 wagon costing me way too much in fuel, did 25k in it last year which equates to around £5k in fuel!!!!
Am going to get a tdi something but havent a clue what to go for, any advice? I want to spend around 7-8k

Passat, Audi A4/A6 - well built, good 1.9tdi's - 50+ MPG and capable of very high mileages.
Or maybe and LPG conversion for the Scoob? Should almost 1/2 your fuel bill

if you are looking at VAG, the newer 140ps 2.0 tdi's rock, very refined and strong. If you are looking at older 1.9's the 130 and 150 variants are the only ones to look at, the 90/100/105's are poop, Went to belgium on a steady cruise in a 100bhp 1.9 tdi bora and averaged 38mpg, rubbish and it wasnt driven that hard. Did the same thing in a 150 golf and averaged over 50.
Also remeber to look at both seats and skodas same engines. but more for your money. I actually prefer the leon tdi (cupra ?). to the golf.

For economy with good in-gear punch and (dare I say) real world performance deffo the VAG PD130 / 150 motors.
The Ford TDCi is a good motor but I've seen owner reports which say they cannot get the claimed mpg figures. dunno about the Peugeot / Citroen HDis.
My own Passat PD130 has averaged 47mpg (actual measured consumption, yes I'm a sad git ) over 25,000 miles and gives 50+ mpg on a run, cruising at 85-ish.

Passat you will pay strong money as everybody knows they are good... the Leon looks better IMO. Passat estate hard to beat if you can get a good looked after one for your budget however.

I would go for the Seat Leon Cupra PD150, wife has one great fun to drive, has slightly stiffer suspension than the golf, also comes fully loaded, test drove all the other cars and found this to be the best all rounder, even drove the skoda, average return over 6000 miles now is about 45 to the gallon, one warning though you have to use special engine oil in the engines due to the pump injector running at 25,000 psi, it's about £12.00 a litre at VAG but Simon ( oilman) can get this cheaper. Hope this helps.

If you use the boot space in the wagon then have a look at the Octavia, the boot is huge even on the hatchback.
The PD130 in the old shape Octavia is a bit hard to get second hand but there are a few about.
The new shape Octavia is also out with the new 140bhp 2.0 16V PD engine.
The PD130 will remap upto 190bhp 310lbft.
My Octavia will return 65mpg on my 10 mile A and B road run to work, even during the cold spell with my wife running the car around town its doing over 45mpg.
The tank takes around £38 to fill once the light is on and I usually get around 550miles on that, there are members on Briskoda that have seen over 700miles between fill ups.

I've done the Scooby ownership thing as well as running some big engined automatic motors.
I'll soon be doing over 100miles a day so diesel is the only option for me.
I've actually bought my wife a Fabia 1.9TDi as well, it's not that fast off the line but in gear performance is very good, it's a supermini with 177lbft of torque.
I used the Fabia a couple of weeks back for work and averaged 68.9mpg which is exactly the same as the official extra urban fuel economy figure.
When I bought mine I got load of abuse from my workmates as you can imagine. Since I bought both Skoda's my Network Supervisor has bought a Fabia vRS, our projects engineer has bought a Fabia 1.9TDi and our Electrical Engineer has bought an Octavia vRS.
The Octavia vRS is a bargain at the moment, they have dropped the list price to £13990 and you can get close to £13k at most dealers. Give Jabbasport £425 and you have a 225bhp, 160mph car with all the toys for under £14k.
There are a few remap and mod friendly dealers around as well so no need to blow the warranty. Rainworth Motors Fabia vRS 1.9 diesel demonstrator has 230bhp, progressive Nitrous kit, coilovers, de-cat, 17" alloys and big brake conversion.

Whoever is suggesting Leon Cupras and 2.0 TDIs is talking bolleaux. Please tell me where I can get a decent one for 7-8K

Just to further your price suggestion a bit, if you can run to £8999 a few supermarkets have 18month old 03 Octavia Elegance TDi's available with around 14k miles. Skoda dealers are selling the same VAG Eurofleet cars for over £10500. Have a look at the used cars on skoda's web site and spot the AE,AD,AJ and AF location on the plates, they are the same Eurofleet cars that are in the supermarkets.

They still have the balance of the manufacturers warranty and AA cover.
The Octavia's are also on variable servicing and will go upto 2 years or 30000miles between services. Even when you get to a service it won't break the bank, my local dealer charges £164 for a 2 year inspection service including pollen filter and brake fluid change.

The Fabia 100PD was mentioned above - don't rule it out thinking its limited in the way it drives. Its no Impreza but it still has all the good Fabia traits.
A couple of Briskoda members also used Jabbasport to good effect - 145bhp & high torque with no reliability issues. If you are starting with group 6 insurance rather than 17+ then you can afford a professional remap ?
A non-diesel alternative alternative I will throw in is the 2.0 petrol Fabia if you don't fancy modifications. It also drives really well (despite the press ignoring it)- depends how important economy is. 35mpg, 120mph 9'ish 0-60.

7-8k...can't go far wrong than a Mondeo TDCi 130bhp. Go like stink apparently. I hope to buy a 12k one at the weekend if test drive goes ok.
Never touch french cars, VAG PD engines old technology now...common rail diesel is the new technology as seen in the fords, new vauxhall diesel engine (suspect the same in Saab).

See above on Skodas - I think they're excellent, but I can speak for Mondeos as well as my girlfriend had one of the first TDCi (128bhp/130ps) Mondeos into the country in Dec 2001.
- Handles and holds the road well but eats tyres (we're not hard drivers...)
- Noisy at idle especially for a modern diesel (rattly - VAG Better IMHO)
- Easy to trigger the traction control which bangs in unsubtly
- Very sharp clutch action / angle
- Wind noise from the side door seals
- Not as well built as the Octavia inside or out
- Much roomier than the Octavia for legroom

Common wisdom used to state you need to be doing in excess of 20k miles per year to make a diesel worthwhile with regard to higher upfront purchse cost - is this still the case?
We ahve just sold our Golf TDi 130 which gave excellent mpg - avg 43 I think - but we just weren't doing the mileage in it to get the benefit.

Just done the same, i am laying the scoob up for the winter (during the week )
Mileage for the last two years in the sccob ........ 62K
Can take my time getting bits and pieces sorted (must phone Adam !)

I am in the same position, having baby arrive I am kidding myself I can continue to run the scoob. I really want one of the Skodas but problem is getting rid of the scoob in the first place - as easy as selling ice to an eskimo
With eldest son in the front, Mrs and baby in the back there is just no room in the boot for all the stuff we need to carry about. Total nightmare.
My ideal choice would be the Octavia RS but is the fuel consumption of that going to be just as bad as the scoob? Otherwise its going to have to be a 1.9tdi if and when I can shift the scoob.
With eldest son in the front, Mrs and baby in the back there is just no room in the boot for all the stuff we need to carry about. Total nightmare.

Motorways, gentle cruise at 80ish - 40 mpg
A roads, gentle - 36-38
A roads, quick - 32
A & B, having "fun" - 25-30
Trackdays - About 12
Ring - Anything from 6-10
So, better than a Scoob

Thanks Tavia I test drove one before I got the scoob and loved it to bits but was hell bent on getting a scooby, I now think its time to move on as the boot is just too small and the insurance too expensive and the fuel bill ridiculous. Its still my pride and joy but not much good if I can't fit everyone and everything in it when we go out
