Apartently theyre just a euro GSR, with about 270 - 280 horse power.....
so like any evo, takes off and corners better than the scoobs

Personally, I prefer to have a car that lets me do the driving round the corner and not let it do it for me, just an opinion, try and get one without all the electronic doo-daas and see how well it will go round the corners.

I'll try and get it back on track.

As a new owner of a Evo VIII 260 then I can say I'm well pleased (but then again as a new owner I wouldn't say anything else).

Power delivery seems pretty good (although still on the running in period so only 4K rpm so far) but it is starting to pull from 3000 rpm very nicely.

Brakes are great, again only bedding them in right now.

Interior is ok - better than I was expecting actually although I improved things slightly with the leather upgrade in a matching (to the outside colour) blue and black. A few rattles though...

Stereo sounds ok (for a standard effort, I'm no ICE expert though so for me it just sounds fine, in reality if you like your ICE it will need upgrading I'm sure) the head unit is a mp3 Kenwood unit that spins, swivels, creeks and groans when you switch it on or off - a bit Chav really but hey...

Handling is sharp, steering accurate with plenty of feedback. Suspension is firm and by all accounts not as good as the MR range which run Bilsteins and offer less bounce.

Three years free servicing (upto 27K miles) plus a minimum of £1K off the list price with apparently more to be had if you push hard enough. So worst case it's £23K, priced between the WRX and STI????

You get 261bhp (or is it ps?) although some reports say over 280bhp in reality, good power delivery from 3K rpm upwards, active centre diff, SAYC, sweet 5 speed change, grave/tarmac/snow ACD selection button and a nice intercooler spray button! Loads of technology under your **** to keep the journeys entertaining basically....

 

I'd Consider one of the FQ's but not a 260, if I was after something with that level of power I'd go for a new STI.

Nope, just the last time I looked under my WRX PPP, I didn't notice any wires hanging from my diff or gearbox that didn't control anything but my speedo and reverse lights, and as for the ABS, it doesn't even get a chance with a AP brake kit fitted, ultimately, it still can't beat the grin factor from a Escort MkII RS with a LSD at the back, but hey, those old things can't beat any Evo's or Scoob's on tarmac rallies (oops, forgot that these old cars with a blue oval trashed these jap supercars on the Tour of Mull rally (even EVO RS's) in October this year, again!)

After a number of scoobs, Classic STI, Bug eye WRX, STI7 +PPP and a fair few test drives of the face lift STI I finally decided on an EVO FQ340.
I think a few more people here should go and test drive an Evo before posting (and an STI for that matter).
Vomiting stale old magazine bully here as evidence to support a choice really is a pointless exercise. IMHO the scooby is a great car and probably the better road car and a safer "bet". The Evo is more direct, steering wise, probably less forgiving on the limit and frankly quicker in the right hands but (and it is a big one) you do not relax when driving any distance as much as you could in a Scooby.
The differances between the cars are not that great.It really is down to personal choice and very subjective especially as it also depends so much on your driving style.
I wanted the hard edge the Evo offered over the scoob, I have another car and do very few motorway miles in it, if you are after comfort, better interior worried about residuals reliability mpg etc, buy an Audi or a VW they will put these cars to shame.

 

I looked at a 7 and really didnt like the interior, handling was good, didnt sound as good as the scoob and was slower acelerating, I do have a tweaked ra though so that not surprising really. I didnt see it as a step forward at all, more of a sideways step which would have cost me financially. I got back in the scoob and felt at home again and decided not to go down that road.

I dont what I was expecting to be honest. It does comes down to personally preference at the end of the day and what you want.

 

a good car for the money but i spent 20k on a mint evo 6 instead, i prefer the raw looks of a 5/6 to the later cars

Quite right Mark, if you are going to go for a hardcore car, might as well go for what many consider as the pinnacle of the breed. As for my own opinions on the current Evo range, I believe that Evo's are indeed fabulous, although if it was my money, I believe the price differential between the 260 and the MR range is too small (when I originally looked at the range when I bought my WRX, the 260 was £24000 and the MR's started at £27500 even though they were missing 20BHP, a six speed gearbox and a (reputedly) £1900 rear spoiler). I could not at the time stretch to the MR which I would have considered if I was buying a STi. My main concern is that I don't enjoy cars that assist cornering by self adjusting the car through a corner. I prefer it when the car stays on the line that I intended whether it be a good line or the most pathetic attack on a corner ever seen, it is what I chose, so therefore, I chose a WRX PPP, even though ultimately it may not get from A to B the quickest, it will get there on my instructions alone.

Agree with Scoobycar60.

I am sure the Evo 8 is a fantastic car, and an excellent rally car, however they are doing my head in right now.
Older Evos were all imports IIRC and thus obtained over here by enthusiasts who (hopefully) know how to handle them. In the hands of your typical mid life crisis sales rep they are bloody lethal! One nearly took me out on the slip road into Frankley services (M5 north, just after the M42) got in the lorry lane and didn't realise that the car lane went a different way, yes they corner and brake very very well at speed meaning he was able to get horizontal blocking the entrance to the car lane after steering too much and then was able to stop before hitting the wall, right in the path of my Legacy Thank god the B4 has good brakes too!

I can see them gaining an image problem (ala BMW) in the next few years.

 

The only evo 260 I have seen is the cop car in hertfordshire, not good on any account, it looked abit stupid without a spoiler.

The fords that win in muli****yre are owned by locals who drive the roads everyday most of the time in those cars, they would probably win even if they had a severe disadvantage of being blindfolded.

Did you go this year ? Havent been able to get a seat for the last two so havent been.
