Have a look at the Misubishi Colt. They have released a limited edition "Black" with all the toys and Sat Nav for around £7k I think. It is only 5 door at the moment but in Feb the 3 door comes out.

C2 has a free insurance offer on the C2 at the moment. The car is very roomy in the front seats, but bugger all room in the back seat or boot. Daihatsu Charade is a great car, but the Kia Picanto shades them both now. Very cheap to buy new. 7k will buy you the top spec with mp3 cd, lots of airbags, abs, air-con. Getz is middling to good, the engines aren't great, but they are well made. Yaris is easily the best car of the ones you have mentioned, but at 7k you aren't going to get any kit on the car, its will the boggest of bog standard.
If you want kit and a super little car, it has to be the Picanto, if you want a better car and no kit, then its the Yaris. That's what my choice would be between in your position.

I had an 04 Fabia 1.4 TDi as a courtesy car for a month and it was very good. It returned about 50mpg from just driving to and from work. the car was surprisingly nippy and you could really feel the turbo from 2nd to 3rd.
My mum has a 2001 Yaris 1.0 S, this returns similar mpg to the Fabia and has all the benefits of a jap car. They are quite basic and very plasticy inside however. I thought the steering was pretty light until i drove one with power steering, certainly heavier than a scoob. Gear boxes are very notchy too, although you wont have any trouble getting it into gear!
