Just been offered a Merc 560 SEC
A friend of mine has just come in and offered me a 1987 Mercedes 560 SEC in dark blue MOTed, taxed and running for £800 I've just had a look at the trader and the cheapest one on there is £5k God I'm tempted but I'm not a fan of Mercs normally
Please talk me out of it!!!!

They're supposed to be pretty well bulletproof cars, from the pre-unification days of high labour rates and over-engineering ...... I've never seen one with anything more than very superficial rust spots.
I guess like any big barge, if it blows a head gasket or similar then it's gonna be costly, and tyres / brake pads will get a hard life but probably not much worse than the Carltons you've had ....
PS -- coming from Yorkshire as I do, most of my mates would have no qualms about buying low and selling high. Then again, perhaps I just know a bunch of undesirables

My mate's dad used to have one of these a good few years ago. I was shocked at the pace, but that was a while back as I said. It had over 250k miles on the thing and it was still driving like it was new. They're as strong as an Ox.
If anything did go wrong with it, you're only losing out on £800 max, and that's if you can't sell the bits off it.
You know you wanna

buy it ! my mate has two a 500sec and a 560SEL . He has spent a total of £400 maintaining both in the last year. (he keeps telling me) . He bought his (rusty) 1984 SEC for £1500 - think of the scoob upgrades you could do for the profit

As with any merc of that age there are good ones and bad ones.
I bought a 1990 300 E-24v (230BHP) for £1800 and traded it in for £2500 LOL
560 SEC check for :-
A/C compressor -- £1000 or more for a non-DIYer.
Climate control problems -- £500 or more for a non-DIYer.
Cruise control problems -- £500 for a non-DIYer.
Front suspension rebuild -- £1000 or more for a non-DIYer.
Rear suspension subframe mounts and differential mounts -- £350 for a non-DIYer.
Transmission rebuild -- £2000-2500 for a non-DIYer.
£4000 - £8,000 for a rebuilt engine.
Cracked head -- £2500
Check cost of interior trim bits as some mercs are dirt cheap - Glove box for my 300 was £4 new !!
SL interior bits a megabucks so worth checking the SEC prices..

Ignore it, you can't use cruise control on UK motorways anyway, unless you set it 56 and drive like a trucker
Throw it away when it fails it's MOT
Turn the stereo up if you hear it knocking
You only need 1 gear on these anyway
Throw in a Chevy 454, it'll last forever. There's bound to be an American specialist in this conversion

Isn't that what Patrick Swayze drove in RoadHouse?
If it was a mate of mine, I'd have it in an instant if it looked comparatively straight!!
