Just been offered a Merc 560 SEC

A friend of mine has just come in and offered me a 1987 Mercedes 560 SEC in dark blue MOTed, taxed and running for £800  I've just had a look at the trader and the cheapest one on there is £5k  God I'm tempted but I'm not a fan of Mercs normally :o

Please talk me out of it!!!!

Jap2Scrap 12 November 2004 04:06 PM

I'll have it :D

brickboy 12 November 2004 04:08 PM

There's your answer -- get for £800, into AutoTrader for £5K ono .....

Has to be worth an inspection and lengthy test drive at the very least ;):D

Jap2Scrap 12 November 2004 04:10 PM

not really, bit of an old man's car.

I don't think it'd be right doing that to a mate though otherwise I'd have it tomorrow and sell it! I think he wants to do a deal with someone who'll keep it so if I did I'd have to keep it for a few months 'til i got "bored"

hmmm sounds like an idea!

I have the guys number anyway so I'll have to have a think

brickboy 12 November 2004 04:15 PM

Paul, you're obviously not from Yorkshire, then ;)

Here's a bit of eye candy for you:

That's the ones  I can't see why it's so cheap  He reckons the guy can't afford to keep it but £800  I may have to go and have a look

Brendan Hughes 12 November 2004 04:19 PM

huuuge V8, RWD, fantastic reliability, massive profit whenever you choose to resell it...

nah, don't do it Paul...

:D

Edit - the ultimate in wet trackday fun, surely??

Paulo P 12 November 2004 04:22 PM

STOP IT!!!!

 The missus really would kill me!

brickboy 12 November 2004 04:26 PM

They're supposed to be pretty well bulletproof cars, from the pre-unification days of high labour rates and over-engineering ...... I've never seen one with anything more than very superficial rust spots.

I guess like any big barge, if it blows a head gasket or similar then it's gonna be costly, and tyres / brake pads will get a hard life but probably not much worse than the Carltons you've had ....

PS -- coming from Yorkshire as I do, most of my mates would have no qualms about buying low and selling high. Then again, perhaps I just know a bunch of undesirables :)

Cupramax 12 November 2004 04:26 PM

Mmmmmm PIMP DADDY :D

Just do it, or give me the 'phone number of the chap selling! ;) :D They're fantastic cars

Matt

Dazzler 12 November 2004 05:24 PM

My mate's dad used to have one of these a good few years ago. I was shocked at the pace, but that was a while back as I said. It had over 250k miles on the thing and it was still driving like it was new. They're as strong as an Ox.

If anything did go wrong with it, you're only losing out on £800 max, and that's if you can't sell the bits off it.

You know you wanna ;)

the moose 12 November 2004 05:54 PM

Sheesh, if you don't want it, let me know. I'll take it off your hands unless it's a total shed.

joolz74 12 November 2004 06:11 PM

buy it ! my mate has two a 500sec and a 560SEL . He has spent a total of £400 maintaining both in the last year. (he keeps telling me) . He bought his (rusty) 1984 SEC for £1500 - think of the scoob upgrades you could do for the profit ;)

Sith 12 November 2004 06:22 PM

Buy the 560SEC, and take it to a nice AMG dealer and fit it with plenty of gofaster options. 20" Chrome Dubs, Blacked out windows.

ian_sadler 13 November 2004 10:43 AM

Paul,

If you don't want it I'll have it ................... and the corner :D

what would scooby do 13 November 2004 10:52 AM

As with any merc of that age there are good ones and bad ones.

I bought a 1990 300 E-24v (230BHP) for £1800 and traded it in for £2500 LOL

560 SEC check for :-

A/C compressor -- £1000 or more for a non-DIYer.

Climate control problems -- £500 or more for a non-DIYer.

Cruise control problems -- £500 for a non-DIYer.

Front suspension rebuild -- £1000 or more for a non-DIYer.

Rear suspension subframe mounts and differential mounts -- £350 for a non-DIYer.

Transmission rebuild -- £2000-2500 for a non-DIYer.

£4000 - £8,000 for a rebuilt engine.

Cracked head -- £2500

Check cost of interior trim bits as some mercs are dirt cheap - Glove box for my 300 was £4 new !!

SL interior bits a megabucks so worth checking the SEC prices..

Nah, it's winter, you don't need air-con

Climate control problems -- £500 or more for a non-DIYer.
Wear a coat if it's cold, open the window if it's hot

Cruise control problems -- £500 for a non-DIYer.
Ignore it, you can't use cruise control on UK motorways anyway, unless you set it 56 and drive like a trucker

Front suspension rebuild -- £1000 or more for a non-DIYer.
Throw it away when it fails it's MOT

Rear suspension subframe mounts and differential mounts -- £350 for a non-DIYer.
Turn the stereo up if you hear it knocking

Transmission rebuild -- £2000-2500 for a non-DIYer.
You only need 1 gear on these anyway

£4000 - £8,000 for a rebuilt engine.
Throw in a Chevy 454, it'll last forever. There's bound to be an American specialist in this conversion

Cracked head -- £2500
See above

There you go, absolutely NO reason not to buy it now :D

brickboy 14 November 2004 03:18 PM

bangernomics gone mad ;):D:D:D

mj 14 November 2004 06:13 PM

has your mate not looked in the trader?

Just find a Merc mechanic that enjoys doing the head of the Simpsons family (oops, that would be me then!). Just don't deliver it to me if you are wearing dodgy golfing gear as I won't take payment in kind from any of your bitches.

I'm now looking at one this afternoon  the guy has offered me another one (might even be the same car) and he's bringing it round

What are the performance figures like for these?

Squizz 24 January 2005 01:05 PM

Isn't that what Patrick Swayze drove in RoadHouse? :o

If it was a mate of mine, I'd have it in an instant if it looked comparatively straight!! :D
