Mk3 Golf column stalks question

I need to change the wash/wipe stalk on a Mk3 golf with an airbagged steering wheel. Do they clamp around the column, or do I have to remove the wheel to do it like a Mk2? If it's the second, how do I remove the wheel?

I don't know if you have to remove the wheel to do that job but the wheel is really easy to remove on them it's just a 24mm nut. if yours has an airbag disconnect the battery for ten minutes before you start
