Pug 205 GTI, 1.6 or 1.9?

Pug 205 GTI, 1.6 or 1.9?
Okay, i'm changing the run around as im changing jobs and moving.
I've decided for a Pug 205 GTI as a day to day and a bit of tracking eventually.
I know that a lot of people on here run them as second cars and i'm just wondering if the 1.9 is loads better than the 1.6.
I'm probably looking at the phase 2, either in blue or black.
Is it better getting a mint standard one or a ready modded fast road weapon?

1.9 all the way more torque better brakes discs on rear and def a standard one shame to see so many modded in a poo way if your going to do any thing just go for the old rally look better than a max power look

I would get one with a 1.9 at least (or an mi16 conversion done right).
Would also try and get one with the steel roof as the sunroow models look cr@p IMHO
!.6 has rear drum brakes, cloth seats, and 14" wheels.
1.9 has half leather, rear disc brakes and 15" wheels (that look good anyway)

Mmmm I would disagree. I had a 1.9 which I converted to an Mi16 with a 1.6 gearbox. About the same time I took a 1.6 out for a 30 mile test drive.
I actually prefered the 1.6 - although it was obviously slower than the 1.9, it seemed more nimble. Most enthusiasts reckon the best alternative is to convert a 1.6 to Mi16 - the track is different between the 1.6 and 1.9's which makes them handle different. The 1.6's also feel lighter - I know it's not possible (as the 1.9 engine is a bored out 1.6) must be something to do with the smaller wheels/tyres and the track differences.
Mi16 engine is an acquired taste - it feels how I imagine a CTR to feel (gutless low down and need the pods revving off it). The Mi16 engine became the 172 engine (in the Citroen BX 16 Valve and Pug 405 MI16 the engine developed 160bhp)...
Also 1.6's tend to have had an easier life - just do some proper research as there are loads of dogs...I spent close to £8k on mine...you have been warned!!

Seriously though, the 1.6 has mildly better manners in traffic, the 1.9 hunts a fair bit, doesn't bother me though, but the 1.9 extra's also win it for me, leccy windows etc and the bits mentioned above. The 1.9 is also a better starting point if you're going to mod.
Mine has PAS - its superb, best PAS I've ever driven, still very weighty and hardly changes the steering feel at all IMHO, also has a quicker rack which really makes em turn in

Thanks for the advice so far.
I've at the moment got my eye on a J-reg 1.9 in black.
100k miles, engine was rebuilt @ 80k and its had a cambelt change less than 1k ago.
How well do these take the miles, especially if i'm considering giving it a bit of stick on the track?

Same as any engine really, there are units out there on 200k, alot around 120-150, some rebuilds but alot not, so it will take the stick fine If the worst happens though, a rebuild or replacement engine is pretty cheap!

I've had 1.4, 1.6 and Mi16 - problem with the 1.6 was it always felt like second best - not so much these days as they are rare but back in the good old days 1.9 owners would laugh at 1.6 owners
I honestly dont find the handling any different between my old 1.6 and current Mi16.
And when you come to track it wahck an Mi16 in yourself - mines blown now but spent the last few days removing the engine - first time i've done anything major like this and its actually very enjoyable, if a little knackering.

Good spot buddy!, I'm just going to hold though, the J-reg that I have seen is in Black and is up for £900 with 100k so I think I should be able to get a bargin, if the car is as good as the advert says.

One thing to look for on the J-Reg's - The 92 model paintwork had a defect and they tend to fade badly on the bonnet and roof, so have a good look and make sure it hasnt been temporarily t-cut out.

I do think the 1.6 handles sweeter than a 1.9 BUT the 1.9 is a much better overall package.
Try and be objective when viewing as they're all pretty old now and will mostly have been enthusiastically used (and in some cases abused), the engine's are pretty strong - it's the rest that can be a pain.
