Mitsubishi Galant VR4 vs Subaru Legacy B4 RSK vs Volvo T5R etc..
have been thinking for a while now about whether to change the scoob for something bigger (space wise) and less cost plus general practicality and have looked at the above. However scoob is only worth £7.5k tops probably (uk 98 model) and wont be buying anything more expensive.
Am trying to work out pros and cons of each to see whether its even remotely worth considering.
Mitsu looks good, is priced well and from what I know is pretty rapid. However I think they are pretty heavy and will be even worse than the scoob on petrol? Also servicing costs?
I absolutley adore the Legacy B4's but they are miles more money the GTB 's look good in 5 door but again more money than a Mitsu. Also all are imports and could be an issue with parts/servicing?
The Volvo's look the cheapest of the alternatives for the T5's/R's in the 850 model (looked at the other thread already). Probably the most practical in terms of servicing and parts etc? But performance massively down on the others?
What else is there to consider for large 4 door saloons/5 door estates that have sports performance/scooby equivalents that are low priced (below £8k)
Ideally i'd have an RS4 but then who wouldn't!

Stick with a Scooby
Foresters are excellent, all the power or a WRX (if you go for an imported one) but the space of a proper estate car.
As it happens I have one for sale

In fact just found out the Octavia VRs is now in my price bracket and this is top of my list now (looked a few months ago and couldn't find one below £9k!)
Problem is trying to sell the scoob
Anyone know what the early (2001) Octavias were like? Any issues to look out for?

Best decision I made (honestly). No major problems with any of the Octavias. You'll be welcomed at www.briskoda.net by at least a dozen ex-Impreza drivers.

The 4x4 lacks the visuals, trim and sporty bits of the vRS but has an identical engine -only ECU retarded to 150 rather than 180bhp. They remap to identical levels, so if money's tight, you could get a 4x4 and add the vRS bits as and when. I drove both and decided I wanted to keep AWD.

Flat 4X4 knows what he's talking about he gave me loads of good advice and even though I haven't got one I'm going to go for the 1.8T Elegance 4X4 Estate. Practical, undesirable to scumbags, very tuneable and cheap. I guess I want the security of 4WD and to get all the power down when the tuning starts!!!

Well being a Volvo man, i will fight for that corner. I will let others comment on the Subaru, but the Mitsubishi is pretty poor on reliability and with it being a rallyart model it basically needs a service every 4000 miles !! I have had a pop with one of these cars, and without talking to the owner i have no idea what mods he had, but an exhaust and dump valve i know he did have, once i gave chase there was nothing in it from 40 to 70+ (ish)
So that leaves the Volvo.
good points
probably the most accomadating car
Doesn't rattle like a jap car
Durable interior and exterior
Good for silly miles on 1 engine
Very cheap to service
Astonishing mid range power from a 5 pot
'R' models have LSD's
few mods make big power
Bad points
I like the look, not everyone does
FWD
Handling needs work but not bad
Brakes are good, could be better
QUICK ADVERT
My mate is selling his car as of last night. It is a V70 R in black with full black leather/suede sports seats, multi disc, climate, x4 windows, roof, 17" referb'd wheels, fantastic condition, FVSH up until this year then local dealers, brand new turbo back branded exhaust. These cars are 250 bhp standard but with a sports cat and stainless it should have gained a good 15-20 ish. The last thing to do on this car, in my opinion, is a RICA ecu. £600 including ITG panel filter, result = 330bhp 450NM torque.
1998 R reg 160000 miles £6000 !!!!!
Bad pics but all i have for now ?!?!?

Thanks chaps for the replies. Aaquil agree with you ont he Elegance, been looking at them and the estate 1.8T is very nice!
As for the Volvos, I know what you are saying and do believe you but I couldn't touch any car that had done 160k, just got a mental block about touching anything that high, to be honest wont buy anything over 70k!
However since looking up Parkers value for my car and finding out that its book price is £6.5k and that there are lots of scoobs on here and in Autotrader fro sale that no one can sell I can't see me being able to sell it for the price I think its worth Looks like classic scoob owners are stuck with their car now unless you want to practically give it away

No, but had a look on their website and their stock is all very late models and way way above what I am looking to spend. IE saw in Autotrader a 2001 VRs with 44k for just under £7.5k! At the main delaers thats at least another 2k. If I had a buyer for the scoob i'd be on the phone to the private seller of that VRs right now at that price

I know your not in the market at the moment and this link has absolutly nothing to do with me but I have seen this on ebay and seems right up your street.
The seller looks like a trader so maybe have a chat with him?

If you would consider a JDM Forester then I'd be interested in an Impreza as now the wife's got a 7 seater I don't need the space.
I'm after £7,995 for a MY99 T Forester.

It's changed my perceptions of how well cars age.

Steve thats a very nice car, thanks for the link May well try and contact the seller but think he will want a lot of cash on top of my scoob for that.
Gavnik that I like! Very nice. How come you are selling it so soon after importing it? Purely due to the wifes 7 seater? Is it difficult to get parts as they don't import them any more? Can chat on pm if you want?
Moose I've seen lots of cars I like at well over 100k and I know I am reducing my possible purchases and making life very difficult by having a low mileage limit but I just can't get used to the idea of spending 6/7k on a car that to me has done very high miles.

Car I've got at the moment is good C70 T5 GT 2.3 Manual
240bhp in standard format
Get it chipped and it's a barnstomer
Goes from 240 to 310 bhp
and 330nm torque to 430nm
Mine was a shade under 9k not sure what they are like in Kent
Looks lovely in silver aswell.
The GT pack also comes with the dolby surround sound system, 11 speakers
VR4 is far too expensive to maintain
Service is every 4500 miles
Also has the dreaded cambelt change which can be approx £700
RS4 you need to take to a specialist and will also be expensive.
Get the Volvo mate, you know it makes sense

That ebay one ...
He's missed a few deatils.
1. The test is £180
2. Needs more than just a speed conversion. As it's a 99 model it wil need a model report which I don't think exists for this year/model. Easy to do if you've got 5k spare!
Be very careful buying non-tested imports.
I've got a standard FTO coming in next week and the SVA/MOT for that is nearly £800 all in.
I've also just bought a 95 Legacy GT-B which is being shipped, again about £800 for the SVA!

Pal of mine is a BBC cameraman and has a V70R. I think it's a dreadful car. It has far too much power for a front wheel drive car, in my opinion, understeers, squirms - all the stuff you'd expect with that much power - I'm convinced there's only a certain limit you go to with a front wheel drive car before it becomes 'lost'. Another cameraman (volvos are very popular with those types) has a 2.4T AWD and it feels a much more assured, usable car.
