getting a rover 414
selling my scooby due to moving to london and getting a cheap runabout car which will be nice for motorway driving and cheap around town. After looking at insurance ive choosen to get a 97-98 rover 414 hatchback. Parkers web site says 41 mpg. A freind has one and says he gets 400 miles to a tank normal driving and 350 around town. Anyone here owned one and what opinions on them? looking to spend 1k on one with about 60k on the clock

Can't admit to ever owning one but did drive a few when they were new back in 95/96. I'd reckon on 35-37mpg being more realistic, unless you use the acceleration, which is better than you'd expect from a 1.4 (103bhp)
The ones I drove varied though. I once checked the badge on one because it was way faster than normal, and it was a 1.4.
Recent experience is that the parents have a 200 1.8vi and its very economical when you don't rev it.

Just got a Coupe 216 AUTO !, was going to sell it and make a few quid but its so nice I cant bear to part with it, the Coupe is worth a look as its a lot more agile than than the other models, plus I think they still look quite good. Oh the 1.4 K series just isnt that economical, I have had a few and 30 mpg round town is about average, out on the open road nearer 40 but you do pay for the (comparative) extra performance over say an Astra 1.4.
