What is the quickest REAL WORLD A > B Car?
Not track.
Not drag.
Just real life, nice country roads. Etc Etc.
Year for year, pound for pound. What car is the all out best??
Must be able to buy it, so no kit car's etc. And to keep things slightly real lets keep a 50k budget, give or take. As this is real world and for most people 50k+ is not real world!!
So what do you reckon?
Type 25?
Spec C?
EVO FQ 340?
Skyline?
BMW M3?
VX220?
Porche?
Decisions... Decisions....

out of the ones mentioned i would say take out the Spec C as the Type 25 is more likely to be quicker due to more low down grunt, i'm the the Type 25 could easily outrun a standard Skyline? and well the Spec C is meant to be a match if not better than an M3 CSL on real roads, so between T25 and FQ340 from the cars you have put
All IMHO anyways

Quickest A-B car would be a Caterham R300 (probably just qualifies as you can buy one complete). Obviously it's a pretty extreme car, so if you want some comfort (ie a roof, doors and less noise) then the Elise/VX would be next, then a second hand Noble perhaps and so on. As soon as your into the electric seats and CD player world of the M3's, you're going slower and slower.
If it was me, I'd have a 996 - £50k would get you a lovely Mk1 GT3 996 I think, or a very nearly new C4 which would probably be quicker accross your A-B route anyway.

He said no kit cars... although the R500 is factory build only.. so not a real kit car..
I am quite sure my subaru would be quicker on a bumpy b road than an R300 (used to own one). R500 maybe not.
IMHO its got to be an FQ340.

My list at the top was only idea's, don't have to choose out of them, suggest anything
So far it seems a 966 or an FQ340 as the quickest a > b production car available.
Keep em coming!

I own a 300 bhp/ton Westy and a Subaru.
The Westy is quicker than the scoob in all scenerios, except bumpy B roads and the wet (and 130mph+).
IMO the 4WD 911 turbo is the car for ALL seasons.
Back on budget I'm sure a 600 BHP R32 can be done for £20k

996 C4S... but then I am biased.
Had a contest with an Evo FQ300 recently and I took ground above 60mph, but I did get killed by a 996 turbo (only on the straights though) at the weekend!

On the rough, wet stuff (i.e. the UK ), the Type25 would be my choice. Never mind the grunt, the suspension setup alone makes it a killer a2b back road car.

Indeed, for this you must take into account UK weather, and be using the car all year round.
So if it's no good in the wet, then it's not a contender.
Has to be based on UK weather!!
996 Turbo & Type 25 seems to be winning!

Arrrr, but what are they like in the wet, salty, leaf covered winter roads?
Must be quick all year round, without having to watch the weather channel before you come out! (that rules tvr's out)

This wouldnt half make an interesting road test in EVO or something though wouldnt it??
EDIT: Actually just remembered the Pilot Cup slick type things that these have as standard so probably wouldnt be good in the wet/snow either!! *scratches head some more*....

996 Turbo if you stretch the budget. I'm in no doubt that it's the fastest standard production car cross country.
If you have less cash one of the quicker Evos I would have thought.

I have owned most of what I term as everyday fast A-B cars, including Subarus, M3, Skyline R34, EVO, Carrera 4 and now a factory upgraded 993 TT.
I think it would be difficult to beat the EVO, BUT with what I found was an extremely hard ride.
The 993 TT will pulverise any of them on any bit of straight (8.4 secs to 100mph and 4.4 secs from 60 to 100mph) and is almost up with the EVO in cornering with a wonderful ride thrown in. Oh, and the breaks are pretty special as well.

Yeah, going by what Mags say, such as Evo who have carried out nurmerous real world tests comparing all the cars including Super and Hypercars, the 996 Turbo is the fastest point to point car, that soaks up all the bumps, but £50k budget?...more like £70k second hand. Add the optional 450bhp pack, (or even a tuned upto 550bhp to keep lag low and nothing would touch it).
Autocar did a test last year and even timed the cars over a B road route (cough) and athlough the Porshe didn't feel as quick as the Noble that came second (it beat the Evo 8 Exteme but some margin, and the Caterham R300) the figures told a different story that the Porshe was still quicker, and thats without the upgrade packs.
Kit cars would not soak up the bumps as well so you tend to back off.
Got to be the Type 25 for that money, stock, if can call it stock.
(Evo's would be a better bet with their modifying potential though)

This is one that will just come down to Subaru / Evo again because nothing can really touch them in the wet!
As far as what is actually quick, a mate of mine anhialated me in a totally standard Elise down a nice country lane and I know that a couple of Caterhams are even quicker. Those who are saying Caterfields etc are put off by bumps just means you have only driven badly set up cars or cars just set up to go quick around a circuit. Admittedly, I have had a Caterham Blackbird that was a real handful on the road because it was set up for the track but I have another that would wipe the floor with the Elise and the Subaru in the dry on any road (motorways excluded) and it only has 133bhp!!
Good point about the Cayenne, the only thing that holds the speed back is visability, not how fast a car is.

Along very well known sections of B road that I know I can really push my SLR hard and I am sure an evo or skyline would not keep up. However put me on a road I dont know so well, bumpy, damp and traffic etc then I would have no chance.
The other problem I have in the SLR is the visability is poor as you are so low down and that moves your limit points and in the end makes you drive slower.
Put my SLR on a track though and you will need a 100k+ supercar to keep up (or a Westfield )

Nope I rekon you have missed one (providing it does not have to be brand new).
Lancia Delta Intergrale EvoIII. Built out of old bits of tin and sticky back plastic. But what a car.

Misty: possibly, but that'd be because you'd have been bounced off a bump in the road into a field whereupon you could just take the shortest route from A-B...i.e. through the field! The Scooby's suspensionis much better resolved for dealing with typical british B roads, the EVo is quite a car, however.
We also need to take the driver into account when considering the fastest point to point car. One of the principle reasons Scoobies and Evos are so quick is that they are relatively forgiving and easy for joe average to drive quickly. I'm sure there are few cars that are capable of more, but most people would loose their nerve way before they'd reached the car's limits.
Best.
