Question starting problems with an astra diesel 2 litre 16v

maybe someone can help? my dad has got the above car with an intermitent starting problem.

car just turns over and over with no sign of life, normally eventually starts but today it refuses to start and is now sat out the front of the house sulking

has also had a problem where the car starts normally but then the revs die and the engine stalls as he is pulling away (he doesn't stall it, the engine just dies).

does anyone have any advice on this or any sites i can look at with info?

cheers

You can look on the forums (backroom) here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk and search for astra diesel starting problems.

A problem with older astra 1.7 diesels was valve clearances - if not adjusted every 15-20k or so they get harder and harder to start from cold. Put them right again and they start on the button. A common problem with newer astra diesels is engine management, but you'd get a light on the dash for that. Maybe it's something simple like fuel starvation - you checked the filter?

Sounds like air ingress at the filter head or the injector spill (return) pipes.
what happens on these is when the car is left if the fuel pipes or filter head aren't air tight the fuel drains back to the fuel tank so when you try to start you keep cranking until the system finally primes up (if your lucky) and starts.
Next time it wont start loosen the 4 injector pipes about one turn and then crank the engine over until you see fuel coming out of all 4 loosened pipes.retighten the pipes and the engine should start staightaway.
(loosening the pipes and cranking over is the quickest way to prime the dry fuel system).
If there is fuel present as soon as you crank then the problem may well be down to intermittant/faulty glow plugs not correctly pre heating the engine (easily checked with an inductive amp clamp with around 60+ amps being about right, anything much lower points to a fault)
This is a known prob with this engine and is normally cured by renewing the o rings on the fuel pipes at the filter head and replacing the old perished spill piping that runs between the injectors....
