Default RX7 Buying Advice

thinking of buying one, but heard numerous bad reports of blown engines and high maintenance costs. have a budget upto 8k, so not going to be able to have a late model minter.

would a AA check be enough? what should i look for?

Remapping? Not to sure, on Optimax I doubt you'll have a problem.

MPG - not great. Does about 23 average.

very nearly got one myself, even went to a couple of meets curtesy of the forum scooby-si mentioned, (good site BTW)

put off by the fact the engine is due for a FULL REBUILD every 40k miles!!! some last more, some less!

went out in a Type R1 which the owner said was 280bhp but if i remeber correctly they have 260bhp, must say my 96 Jap STi is noticebly quicker. the Rex has very good top end though, around 165mph. (very streamlined car!) handling is very good also, plus the fun of rear wheel drive.

8k should get a good model, maybe worth paying a little more to get one that has just had an engine rebuild and is under guarentee. company in norwhich do this, cant remember the name...

goo luck whatever you decide mate, very nice looking motor

Ive told my story many times, had a very bad experience with them, even using the best importer to source one.
They are extremely expensive to run, dont underestimate that, fuel consumption is very poor, and rebuilds generally reach over three thousand quid, regardless of rebuilders initially quoting cheaper.

But, if you buy one thats had a rebuild, it should give you a reasonable amount of reliable motoring, just be prepared for heavy bills should anything go wrong.

Just so so damn nice thou!! I still miss seeing mine in the morning, very beautiful and very fast.

40k is BS thou 60k is usual figures with some more some less heard of very few <40k thou & depends on whats damaged as to how full a rebuild it has to be but cheaper than a boinger engine rebuild anyways...

Lol, yeah, I was just mega unlucky, from being on the RX7 forum I know mine was an exception rather than the norm, but they are still very expensive cars to run regardless of good or bad luck. I was warned, but having the rebuild so soon after purchase, and not getting the £3250 it cost back through the joke of a warranty meant the ongoing expense was just too much

Believe it or not, I still crave after one again sometimes, see some amazing examples for sale on the mazdarotaryclub for sale section, amazing looking cars on the road, always enjoy seeing them on the odd occassion I do.

If I do ever get another, it will be one of the last RZ's built, or something in that class, with a rebuild, and mods already on it.

Make sure whatever one you get has had a rebuild Peccy, its a major pain leaving your car in the sheds the "specialist" rebuilders work out of, constantly calling them for updates etc, and it aint cheap, you can save yourself a lot of time and money by waiting for the right one, with a warranty on the build, and preferably less than 5k miles on the new engine. Also, single turbo conversion is good, means the turbo is relatively new, so you wont have the potential of the turbo's failing, or the extremely complex twin turbo system malfunctioning.

There are good ones, but you have to pay that bit extra, and make sure all of the above applies. Id be surprised if you found the right one for £8k or less im afraid, you'd only get one approaching 50k miles, with a rebuild due in the next 10k miles. If you want a good one id say you're looking at £11k upwards, though some come up at around £10k too.

Just dont make the mistake I did and buy cheap, you pay a lot more in the long run, save up for the right car rather, if I could go back its what id do.

peccy the tips wear out due to the heat and friction, the cars on average last about 60k miles but can cover much more. looked into GREAT detail in buying 1 last year before deciding they was very inpractical. 17mpg too
