As thread title what would any of the above be like as a weekend car?

Anyone who's owned one care to comment on costs of ownership (my main concern) and also I'm not too clued up on Classic insurance status but would it be possible to insure for a 22 year old?

other possibility is a 3dr Sierra Cosworth

I used my 944 Turbo as an every day car for 18 months - I now only really use it for the Nurburgring, which it does rather well!

Costs can be found here. Not cheap, but failry good depreciation wise. I have no idea what you drive every day now, but if it's an Impreza......you will sell it because the 944 turbo is better!

Doubt it - I tried everywhere last year to get classic insurance on a 1994 Porsche 911 (age 23), but nowhere would touch under 25's

3dr Cosworth might be insurable on a classic policy - give Firebond a call. I ended up getting a 205 1.9 GTi Turbo Technics which is at least as fast as a Cossie and was only paying £395 (3points, 0 NCB), but then Cosworths are notoriously high for insurance, so you might be unlucky.

I think the 944 has door handles off a Golf Mk 2.

I pay £300 per year insurance with free track day cover.

I'm 23. My 944 Turbo costs me £1200 to insure and I have "some" points.

I could see myself buying a 944 turbo at the start of next year. How much for a good one ? How does MPG and servicing cost compared to a scoob ? What are the performance figures like ? Anybody got any pics of one of the good ones ?

10k should buy you a good one, 10k-12k for a peach. MPG not great, about 17-20mpg.

0-100 in 13.5 secs and considering the 0-60 is 5.7 that means that once moving it's fast....and thats before you increase bhp to an easy 300. One of the best bits is the brakes....they are awesome and fade free. For servicing costs, look at the link I provided earlier.

It makes a very special car to own, but things can get expensive. Buy the best you can aford and keep on top of any jobs that crop up. Find a good independant Porsceh specialest, someone who knows the 944.

They are fast, handle superbly and look great.

In the wet they can be fun.

Mine has been "fettled" so its not standard and can be a handfull in the wet. 4th gear 70mph wheelspin anyone?

I havnt 1/4miled mine but have video'd a few runs and got sub 12 sec 0-100 and a 60-100 in 5.6sec in a single gear. (just as a guide)

Mine was one of the last with the bigger turbo, LSD,M030 suspention sunroof delete full sports leather seats. Get the best you can afford...

I have spent about £4500 on it since i bought it. I would expect to get one in this condidtion for about £12k, mine maybe slightly more with the various mods.
The brakes are OK. They actually dont feel that good just in day to day driving but when you are pushing on they really come alive and will haul the car down without fade time and time again.

I average about 24mpg, but have manage over 500miles on one tank on the m-way(about 35mpg)

Nice car, not cheap but one too look out for in the future for classic status.

My insurance costs £550(32yr old) a year classic policy with guarenteed value etc etc.

Thanks for the replies, I haven't had a chance to get any qoutes yet but will try a few classic policy insurers first to get some idea.

slim_boy_fat - how long have you owned yours to spend £4500 on it?

What I don't want is to be spending the same or more of an amount of money maintaining an older Porsche than the depreciation costs of getting a newer car if that makes any sense

My 944 Turbo has just hit 80'000 miles so its a very low miler. Its the later bridge spoiler model (not the hideous rubber spoiler). Had all the top end gaskets replaced so you won't be getting any oil leaks within 4 or 5 years I would think. Clutch is done, cambelt is just been done. Its all been done!!

Just opened the paper to find a 928 S4 for sale for 16 000 euros, that's about 10k. Does that sound a bit cheap?

But cars usually cost an absolute fortune here, you have to buy stuff for 500 euros that in England you'd pay to be taken away for scrap. Hence my surprise.

Bargains can be had!! 928 is not really a fun track/weekend car like a 944 or 968 though. They're big, powerful, heavyt things. Mostly autos.

944 Turbo is the best bet, thats why I got one. Tuneable, fast as standard, handles superb and a quailty motor.

It's a Grand Tourer. It was my fave car when growing up, or the S2 was (S4 had better nose but worse bum). My mate's big brother had one, a true yuppie in the late eighties, he was director of his own advertising firm and changed cars every four months to get the latest performance machine. He kept coming back to the 928 as he said it couldn't be beaten - and yes, he had a couple of 944 turbos.

I don't buy one as I can't justify the fuel bills, or frankly the car itself, but they always tickle my fancy.

My gear box has an Audi logo.

Not a bad van engine that LT..........they managed to squeeze 250bhp out of it, and with a little help it's now at 300bhp.

Just under a year.

About half of that was in performance bit n pieces that to be honest are not necessarily required. A exhaust with decat, new wastegate, chips etc

Usual tyres and stuff. The biggest thing was my ABS pump failed. And I made the mistake of using the wrong garage to get it fixed, kind of shafted me for atleast £800. But lesson learned.

I am trying to get mine back inot top condition as I believe these cars will become truly collectable.

You could run one of these cars very cheaply if you can do bits yourself and don’t care about the condition as it slowly fall apart, I just couldn’t do that.



Prob one of the only main things for me would be a new clutch (£800 or so ) fitted. I am hoping to have at least 4-5 years relatively trouble free. So my spend would be about £1000 a year to keep it on the road.

Brendan- Depends on how much Service History etc. I paid around that a couple of years back from a Porsche Specialist for a 928 S4 Manual.

If you can find an S4 Manual, get one! Had mine for a year, got some slicks for it and had a blast at track days. They have a dog leg gear box which was great once I got used to it. 5 litre V8 320bhp. Took it to Le Mans and cruised motorways at 130 without even trying. 25mpg.Totally reliable and used it daily.

I know some people have nightmares with the electrics but if you find a good un there grrreatt.

I can't justify it . I never drive anywhere for more than 2 hours, and if I did I'd like to take more than a 928 could carry. When I worked in Brussels it could have been ideal (South of France, skiing, home to Blighty), but not in Portugal - a plane trip is far easier. I'm after a short-distance B-lane blatter, now, like 2-seater convertibles or an MCoupe.

Maybe when I get like the guy in American Beauty...
