Default Citroen ZX TD

Anyone had one? I'm after a cheap and economical runabout.

I had one about 6 years ago - was the Avantage spec - 1.9TD. Felt quick (!!) after the diesel BX I'd had before. Very comfortable - reasonable spec inside - decent sized boot. Engine wise - not as refined as modern diesels, but still reasonably quick, and ecomonical - think I used to get near 50mpg. Handled well enough and was easy to drive. I liked it. If you want a sportier looking model, get the Volcane TD, though the engine is the same as in the Avantage.

I'm really undecided whether to go for this (good MPG, bit plasticky) or a Merc 190E (not so good MPG, but well built).

Mate had one of the ZX Volcane's - 1.9 Turbo Deisel, the "sporty" one. If you're after economy I wouldn't bother - he reckoned it was no better than the Petrol Golf he had before it. Said it was slightly better if you didn't use Turbo but seeing as it came it at 2000rpm you didn't have a lot of choice.

Brilliant car - its basically a 305 (not a 306 ) underneath. Great engine. Nice and light therefore lots of poke. Responds well to tuning... bargain car for the $$$'s

But get it checked for rust etc - as its french the parts are dear

No, it is basically a Peugeot 306 underneath. The Peugeot 305 was a saloon car discontinued in 1987 with the introduction of the 309 hatchback.

The ZX is a very good car in Volcane guise. The handling is razor sharp, and the steering is nigh on perfect. Mine was a 1.9i petrol, but the diesel shouldn't be much different, even if the lump is heavier and less powerful.

Go for it.

I had a Volcane TD which was a great car apart from a few electrical problems where it kept blowing fuses for the rear lights.

It had bags of torque and was very reliable.

Actually, for various reasons it now looks like the ZX TD isn't an option.

Going to have a second look at the 190E tomorrow.

Want to sell the 406, PC? I'm going to look at another this morning, but a 1.8 with no aircon.

carl - sorry; i've decided to keep it for another year. just had a bit of work done on it (engine mounts and front wheel bearings). i am on a bit of a mission to save up some money at the moment, so the 406 is still making a lot of sense.

good luck in your car hunting.
