Honda crx 16v or the VTEC both are cool and cheap to insure. Or a 4th gen lude but they have highish insurance.
If your an ok mechanic, get a Mk1 golf GTI and you will be king of the streets.
Or if your gay buy a scooby sport and use wrx stickers and all you mates will envy you. (p.s DISCLAIMER/ANTI FLAME KIT nothing wrong sports, just replicas cars of all sorts bar ones with real performance)

I think i should add that the car is gonna be for my lass. It will be her first car
She likes 106 quicksilvers and similar, but they are out of the price range at the moment

No keeping it, they're too much fun to get rid of.

Beginning work on removing the engine hopefully this weekend, will then see whats wrong with it and rebuild/buy a new unit.

I'd have to go with an early MX5,if you get a eunos import you should be able to pick one up for around 2k,best drivers car for the money and top reliability/residuals.

Erm, I'm sure he said reliable...

Generally the CA18DET motors of the age he'll get aren't the most robust engines in the world.

Shame though...

Pug 306 gti-6 are coming down around this price now and they handle better than a subaru!! You may need to be alright with some spanners though.

D-turbo a good bet, not quick but sooo cheap to run and insure and they don't look too bad.

There are quite a few suggestions here which will hammer her on insurance. Remember we are talking about a lass with zero no-claims.
I'm quite liking the 106 Rallye thing myself, but i'm guessing that using handles to send the windows up and down may put her off. Small potatoes i know, but we are talking about a girl who may not see the fun factor of a 106 Rallye
I think she may be a more looks over function girl.
I put the MX5/Eunos idea to her and she wasn't keen
