£1000 or £5000

£1000 or £5000
Right after an unexpected sale of my Honda del sol vti over the weekend I now have £5k to buy another car ..
I wanted a 200sx however I cant seem to find a good 1 for 5k.
However I then began to think that I could buy a cheap runabout for below a grand and save up some more money and possibly try and invest the remainder of the money until I have accumilated 6-7k .
I've just finished uni and hopefully will soon have a bit more money coming in to put towards a new car instead of buying something which is not really a jump up in cars.
Has anyone got any opinions on what I should do, either suggestions for a 1k car or a 5k car, what to do with the remainder of the money etc...
I'm 21 nxt month so insurance wise nothing 2 crazy (i.e grp 17 o below)
Thoughts on a cheap car were a cheap Porker 924, a old sierra 4 £300, old hilux, mk1/2 golf, mk1/2 escort.....??
Any thoughts..

Although a few people on here will say go for a Peugeot 205 GTI, I disagree and say have a look at some mk2 Golfs!
The 8v is the most driveable of the range IMHO, and doesn't require thrashing to get sensible performance out of it, unlike the 16v.
There are plently about, spares are cheap (thanks to the likes of EuroCar Parts and http://www.gsfcarparts.com) and lots of tuning bits if that's your bag.
Only group 14 insurance and most of them have Cat1 or Cat2 devices thanks to high insurance days of the early ninties, so that should help your quote as well.
I would avoid the Porsche if insurance and running costs are an issue! I got a quote for a V8 Porsche and the quote was £950!! My Honda CRX is only group 12 and with the modifications declared (wheels, exhaust, filter) it's only £300-ish. (Just to give you a relative example!!)
Sierra is also cheap for parts, but is it what you want??
Hilux - Fantastic for transporting your own personal army!!
Mk1/Mk2 Escorts are great fun, but it's getting more and more difficult to find a good one (by that I mean roadworthy one) for sensible money!

Insurance will probably rule out the 924 turbo.
A basic one will get you used to RWD before you go and buy the 200sx (or whatever you get in a few years).
Great car with fantastic handling, OK engine (125bhp), reliable and cheap to maintain (don't ever go to a porsche dealer though their prices are 400% higher than a specialist such as Eurocarparts).
Have a look on www.924.org for some more info.
Insurance I reackon will cost you about £600 TPFT (unless you have been really bad )

Sounds like you are in exactly the same position as me.
Really want a black S14a but am 20 (21 v.soon) so insurance is way out of my range at the mo.
Thinking about getting a 4th gen honda prelude 2.2 vtec to run around in til then.
If you're after a 200sx then try out sxoc.com.
The guys on there are really helpful, and there's quite a few 200's for sale too.
You after an S13 or S14/S14a?
Cant wait til i can afford my own little sx!!!

Not sure what kind of person you are, but if i have money lieing about saving for a car i tend to waste it on silly stuff, a tenner here and a tenner there, hence your 5k may end up being 4.5k and you will be stuck with a **** heep.

One of my neighbours has a lovely one just 2 doors down.
Am stuck on insurance cos have always been on my mums car, so dont have any no claims.

hi, i can recommend a 1.9 205 gti ,i've got one as a second car.
you might be better off going for a cheap boring option for the time being and save the cash for what you really want.
cheers matt

You could buy an old supra (MKIII). RWD, not spending much on it and if you bump it (as long as its not into something else!!!) it doesn't really matter. Get the non turbo one though and it will be a good intro into RWD!
Only a thought though!

I'd definitely go for a Peugeot 306 gti for that money, or even a 306 Rallye. You can pick up a decent one for that money and they're fast (167 bhp) and handle very well for a fwd. Can't go wrong mate.

I'd stay well away from a Porker in the bargain basement sticks, you should be able to get a decent 200sx for £5k, just avoid heavily modded ones. You can't go far wrong with a Mk2 Golf 8/16v both fantastic cars, arguably best all around hatch ever to many. 305 mentalist car, but I have only seen ropy, noisey buckets around lately, you'll probably have a hardder time tracking down a decent one. Agree 306 Rallye, even 106 both not to be under-estimated. You might be able to get a Civic VTI (boring as pants to look at) not quite as mad as a Type R, but still very good motor, and reliable which is what you want for that money.
CRX - refer to Andy Tang
Westfield 1600 cross flow? Beat the pants off any Porcher

Why not get a S13 200SX then when you've saved extra cash or you spot a v.good deal change to a S14a?
Or
Either 106 Rallye 1.3 or Mk2 Golf GTi 8v both fun cars and cheap to run/maintain should get your money back when selling too

I quite like the idea of gettin a 106 but the pedals r a bit 2 close for my size 12's....the golf is a poss contender, although I would like somethin r/wd
I dont no whether to try my hand and buyin fairly cheap cars say 4 around £3-600 and selling them on for a small profit. Thus building my funds up for a S14a.
Has any1 tried doing this and did you feel it was worth your while?
As I say think i'll stay away from an old 924 for a runabout, thought about an old 5 series tho now.
