Thinking of buying a pug 306 hdi turbo from my company but the rep who drives it says the torsion beams need attention due to the weight he constantly carries around in the rear of the car, anyone had any experience of overhauling these and what needs replacing is it just bushes or the whole assembly inc shafts etc??

I had a 205 and the torsion bars were a bitch to separate, I ended up getting a replacement axle instead, but it was a 12 years old car. If they are the same, and they may well be, then it could need either new torsion bars or new bearings inside the rear beam. Either way, I'd get a competent peugeot mechanic to look it over. One mechanic I spoke to said he wouldn't bother overhauling a rear axle again, it's easier to get one from the scrappy.

Its a 1999 W reg car so cant see the scrappies being awash with them, will take it to a garage before parting with the hard earned

It probably just needs the rear subframe bushes replacing. The whole rear suspension is a subframe that then atteches to the body with bushes between body and subframe. Its a DIY job if you want to do it. When the bushes are shot, the back of the car will feel a bit loose and it will clonk when going over rough road surfaces. This is one of the most typical 306 faults, but is not much to worry about. Just a get a competent mechanic to give it the once over on a ramp to confirm this is the fault first though.........

why not book it in for an mot. for £40 it gets a good going over - and should include the suspension.
