My non-scoob track car project......
......1990 Fiesta XR2i, 1.6i 8v. Allright, so its not a westfield or a radical SR3 but i have a scooby to run as well
After a trip to the ring in the sti5, my missus suggested that i get a designated track car rather than thrash the scoob, so i jumped at the chance and here we go....
I've only had it a few months, so bare with me, its still not ready for track use. It gets worked on when i get time and spare cash. i hope to have it on the track by this autumn at the latest.
Prep done so far:
Engine head overhaul
Stripped interior
Profesionally fitted & welded in roll cage
Cobra Imola 2 side mounted bucket seat
3 point harness
15" alloys & tyres
Still to be done prior to track use:
Minor welding repair work
Paint interior inc rollcage
New steering rack
Sparco steering wheel
Fire extinguishers
MOT
Future enhancements:
new exhuast system
lower / stiffer suspension
Another cobra Imola 2 (already have other harness waiting)
So far its cost me under £2 k, and that includes the car

Neat, could still lose some more weight though if you really tried.
1, replace rear side windows with perspex 2-3mm stuff.
2, find any useless bracket etc under the bonnet and cut them off.
After that its a lot more work or expense. Thinking along the same lines myself the now as I'm too scared to take the '03STi on the track but miss doing trackdays but it could all be on hold seeing as jnr is due on xmas day.

Chris, if were to use the 3mm stuff thats readily available from Focus/B&Q etc I think it would make quite a difference if you were to just bond and screw/rivet it in, remember laminated glass is pretty heavy stuff when compared to perspex. As I said before it gets expensive/time consuming after that that. You'll be amazed at how much weight you can get rid of from a shell if you really try, underseal/sounddeadening (the sticky stuff) rear wiper motor assy, hi-fi (of course) additional bumper mounts (the little ones to hold it all straight)
Keep hunting around you'll be amazed at what you can find.

you dont want perspex, you want polycarbonate. Good supplier is www.plastics4performance.co.uk I also have one for a dedicated track day car. You'll have much more fun as you're more inclined to thrash the nuts off it and push it to the limits etc. mine can be seen at www.mckeown-enterprises.co.uk

I have an si as an everday car, they're good fun aren't they!
Take a look at www.fiestaturbo.com Fiesta Frenzy advertise on there, they do the lower front arms with rose joints and camber adjustable ball joints. I haven't used them myself but I should imagine they'd be ideal for track use.
One other point, the side windows and the rear screen are only toughened, not laminated so I don't think the weight saving would be that dramatic

Everybody slates the Fiesta, you'd be surprised how well they go though! OK they lack the grunt of a 205 but then if you're gonna start swapping engines, drop a 2 litre in a Fiesta, I bet that would be a right laugh!
