They make 'some' inroads to this market. However, I suspect a lot of these 40% of Americans who want 4wd in their cars also want a mahoosive car too. i.e. SUV's, off roaders etc.
Subarus are very popular stateside, the Legacys are very popular there, and I believe they also get the 225kw (300bhp) impreza, whereas I think UK and NZ only get a 205kw (276) version.
Though NZ is the only country outside of Japan to get the full 276bhp Legacy RSK.
Mitsubishi AWD Diamantes are now being shipped from Aussie to the US as well, and the US have been keen for some time now on the Legnum VR4 (estate version of the Galant with twin turbos, 4WD, Active Yaw Control, lah de dah).
