Mk2 Golf GTi 8v

Mk2 Golf GTi 8v
I've just driven 1000 miles in the 4 weeks since I bought my GTi and am wondering if there's something wrong with it!?
I've only used £80 of Optimax (at roughly 86p per litre) and driven exactly 983 miles before I filled up again. This works out at 48.29 mpg I really can't believe how good it is and I have quite a heavy right foot too! In fact on the way to the garage tonight to fill up (5mile journey to the nearst Shell garage) I was extremely low thinking I wouldn't make it so was driving like a grandad and the trip computer showed 52.1 mpg
Am starting to wonder if it is in fact a diesel? Might explain the loud Magnex exhaust system with no silencer to hide the diesel noise
Anyway i'm sure there's a few people owned these here am I'm wondering is this normal?

I had a big bumper 5dr 8v about 8 years ago - bright blue metallic, PAS, teardrop alloys, electric windows, sunroof, all the toys. I bought it with 30k on the clock and sold it 4 years later with 130k on it - apart from consumables and servicing I never spent a penny on it. It was the easiest car I sold - about 30 calls from the advert in the Trader in the morning, first person who saw it bought it and there was a guy parked accross the street who said he'd buy it if the first person didn't!
I never got more than about 35/38 mpg in mine - enthusiasticy driven on a mixture of 95 or 98 unleaded. What was certain though, was that it didn't feel really run in until about 40 - 50k miles, and after that it was just sensational.

I had an H-reg Big bumper one.
According to the trip computer, my fiancee would manage about 49.9mpg, where I would average between 28-35 depending on the type road, traffic, weather, etc!!
I would have a mk2 Golf over a Pug 205 any day!! Sure to incite the "Scooby-205-net" community!!!

Each to their own - but you can't really compare an 8v with a 1.9 when it comes to hooning down that stretch of twisty 'private' road!
If it were my first car/daily commute I guess the Golf would be the sensible choice.. But then I'm not sensible...

Last week I was at the car wash and some random bloke appeared asking me if I wanted to sell it!
Only spent money on oil, petrol & 6months tax, will be getting a mate to service it this weekend and hoping to get at least my money back when I get my ITR
