I have a GTi 150 bhp diesel that has been "chipped". A tunit unit. Initial surge at about 1800 -2000 rpm is much better and it revs for longer. 5 and 6 gear pull is noticably better. A 225 TT and a R32 didn't pull away. Gives about 180bhp and about 275lb/ft torque. amazingly mpg is also better. average of 49mpg with some fairly heavyish use. Well worthwhile. All our long journeys are done in the Golf and all the short journeys in the WR1. 22mpg optimax !!

If it's not a silly question, is the WR1 quicker?

I had a mk4 V5 and i had it chipped. the results were very good. because of being a none turbo i only got an extra 15bhp, however the throtle response was exellent compared to the previous response. they also took out 95% of the v5 lumpyness in the engine when in idle.

sorry going on a bit. Speak to AMD Technik in Oxford i dont have their number but they do have a web site. they can help you, i think they can get your car to around 195bhp by chipping, which will cost you about 500 squid. one of the guys up there runs around in a diesel at 245bhp. they got some nice cars up there.

Also try Jabbasport on 01733 211779 or www.jabbasport.com.

We had a 110 bhp Skoda diesel mapped by them (same engine as the older Golf) & it came out at 164 bhp with a torque figure of 393, they initially got more torque but mapped it back to save the transmission, its now done over 30000 miles without any problems, averages about 54 mpg & does get used, Blows off the smaller TT's & tops out at an indicated 135

They are getting much better results with the 130 Engines with the little Skoda fabias hitting around 190 bhp & I believe an Octavia has recently broken the 200 barrier.

If you check their web site you will also note they tune the cars which consistently win the Volkswagen cup races so they know their stuff.

I would recomend whoever you use you go for a remap rather than a plug in device, that way it can be tweaked to your requirements & its also a good check that everything else on the car is working correctly.

what does a remap do to your insurance premiums and warranty? I have an A4 diesel still under the 3 year warranty so am loath to touch it, but would love some extra oomph!

Insurance, depends on the Insurance company so you will need to ask, most will charge you more, probably on a percentage bhp increase so you could "lie" a little about how much it goes up, get whoever maps it to do a soft run on the rollers & give you that print out

Warranty, depends on your dealers attitude, some are OK with it others are not. You need to broach that one gently. The Official manufactures line will almost certainly be NO WAY.

I might be wrong but if yours is a non turbo diesel the gains wont be massive.

If your really worried you could try one of the plug & go options, not as good as a remap but you can remove it for servicing. The only thing Im not sure of is if it will show up in the vag-com codes that its been running differently. Others will probably be able to answer that one

Getting the diesel chipped on Friday! So should make the non scooby days a little bit more bearable. Mind you, when you get more than double the mileage than the scobby you dont mind so much. I seem to only driving the scooby at the weekends and the odd day to work.

Thumbs up

The 1.9tdi in the Golf Mk5 will not go to 190hp, you chaps are comparing it to the 150hp TDiPD engine which this car hasn't got. I would expect to see around 145/150hp with a remap bearing in mind its only 105hp as standard

Talking

I had understood that mine is only 105PS it would expect about 140ps tops.... but the more the better. I think it will be interesting when completed as the car is (nippy) but with a bit more power and all that torque i think it will be a great improvement.

Mind you if you could get a 105ps up to 190ps with a chip tune i think everyone would be going diesel. And we would have a new lad mag call MAXDIESEL on our newsagents shelves
