any advice on things to look out for on a 306 turbo diesel apprieciated.
cheers matt.

here's her current car............
one side looks better than the other...........
don't knock it though, £300 and 20k miles in a year with only an indicator bulb gone wrong.
my my00 has had more than that on tyres alone, never mind petrol, insurance.........etc, etc

i've just bought me one of these, P reg D turbo. If quite old, make sure the cambelt was changed, as a cambelt failure on one of those engines means a single ticket to scrappy...
Some electrics tend to go as well in earlier models, especially central locking and electric windows.
Clutch is usually quite heavy, but make sure the biting point is around centre. If too high, it could be a sign of wear.
Other than that, not much to go wrong, I hear.
MPG wise, I just did a 350 miles trip from Birmingham to Southampton and back, and it cost me half a tank, and 250 mile trip from Birmingham to London on the same tank, and I still have a little left!!! That's economy

Older 306 TD's are 1.9td with 92/90bhp. These engines are dirt cheap to service and run. Just to let you know I did a full service for £30 using genuine parts and top quality oil. Cambelts are about £100 to get done for you. Clutches are a little more obviously, so beware a heavy or stiff clutch pedal. You'll want to see documentary evidence of cambelt changes, either that or get it done immediately after purchase and use it as a bargaining point. And very closely inspect the water and oil, to check its not been mixed in the past, and also check to see it the heater matrix is functioning, many head gaskets only reveal themselves when they blow the heater matrix which is the weak point in the cooling circuit.

I had a 1999 306 D Turbo and it was pretty good - build quality wasn't mega great, but it had reasonable performance, a good chassis and great economy. Watch out for cylinder head gaskets going because it went on the last two Pug diesels I had.

Get the D-turbo rather than the standard turbo diesel as it's better kitted out with electic windows, sunroof, sportier seats etc. Not bad cars, power is 90bhp as you said. MPG is obviously very good. Lots of rattles tho as expected from an older french car. Also the body panels seem a bit thin, my one kept getting tiny little dents in it from other car doors etc, the tinyest touch would dent it where as my other cars would need a harder hit to leave a mark. Other than that they are nice, cheap to run as you say, reliable and surprisingly fun to drive. 306 is known for having good handling and it really does, you have to push it quite hard for it to let go. Mine had coilover suspension and it stuck to the road like it was on rails.
