Reasonable power car wanted for under £2k
As a bit of a part time car, the Subaru is going and I have an SL for the summer, so looking for something to get to work in when it rains, got to be entertaining.... any suggestions?
Currently my ideas are all over the place, Golf GTi mkII, old Jag, old 944, 306, 205gti... Want to try and concentrate on one or the other, please....

Mk2 8v Golf GTI, plenty about, lots of cheap parts, not as many problems as the 16v and IMHO a better drive compared to the 16v!
Honda CRX 16v (130bhp) or VTEC (150bhp), some good ones about but at £2k you'll be looking at a good 16v or a ropey VTEC. There are common problems with rust, so it's a case of finding one without it (like mine ) I've owned modified Golfs and 306's and they don't handle as well as the CRX in standard form!!

I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago looking for the same thing, was looking at 205GTI 1.9, Mk2 Golf GTI 16v, 200SX. In the end I bought a Mk2 Golf GTI 8v with 107k & FSH and i'm well pleased with it (after I got used to no Air Con or PAS ) It's not as quick as some of the other cars I was considering but it handles well, got more midrange go than the 16v, parts are also cheaper too.
Here's mine (I bought the car & payed for insurance for under £2½k btw )

Get one with full leather etc for a grand easy, mines a 92 with 88k on the clock and its still sweet as a nut

Andy Tang has it right, I preffered my 8 Valve Golf to all the other cars I have owned, Fiat Coupe Turbo, Volvo T5 etc, 16 valve Golf, at that money go for condition and reputation not big power.

Cheers, I'd sort of gone towards the golf, a mate is a real fan, thought i could mess around with the engine easily too. But I'm intrigued by the mi16 205, is that a regular 1.9 gti or has it got a 406 engine dropped in it, please?
thanks for all the replies, some interesting ones....

Currently have a Mk1 16v track car, but even with the original 1.6 8v engine was a blast to drive, much better than most other cars I have owned.
Mk2's are great as well though, the 8v is better to drive for a lot of folk as the 16v doesn't get going till 4-4500 rpm. Stick a cam and suspension kit on an 8v mk2 and there is plenty fun to be had with not much hassle regarding maintenance, parts, or insurance
Just watch out for worn bushes and sticking handbrakes, which are the usual suspects

200sx ..... 170bhp, 0-60 in 6.7, standing 1/4 in 15.3, RWD fun and easy to add another 60hp for well under 500 quid. Loads of cheap tuning parts and a great following (see message board on www.sxoc.co.uk).
