Me mate had a similar problem on his '88 car. Managed to get one from a breakers, can't remember how much it was. Why not see if it can be ally welded?

If it's the exhaust manifold then it's cast iron more than likely so can't be ally welded.

Cheers guys. Friends just going to have a look at one tonight and the present owner has confirmed the crack although he says it could hold out for a while yet. Independent specialists have quoted £1000.00 for parts and labour.

Think he's going to use this to knock the price down.

I may be misunderstanding this but cast Iron can be welded but the procedure neccessary in this instance would take a degree of planning.

Turns out it was a bit of a nasty example anyway.

£450.00 for the manifold and the rest was labour and a few other bits. Think he's slowly decided against Lotus ownership. Says the cabin and ride was awful and as for the performance.......quoted 0-60 in 4.7 but was no where near this (264bhp 2.2).

YES I HAD A 1988 ESPRIT TURBO.UNFORTUNATELY ITS AN ENGINE OUT JOB TO REPLACE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD.£450 is correct but its all the labour thats required.mine had 215bhp. and it was quick.the 264 version is a flyer unless he tried a knackered example.but its not a diy car.too many specialised parts and spares are a fortune.check out www.lotusespritworld.com for real information.

My Esprit GT3 manifold cracked a couple of years ago. It's not really possible to weld it on the car ( would you weld on a plastic car ?!! ). Also, you have to heat the whole manifold up to repair it ( so I'm told ) so it's more trouble than it's worth.

So, I had a new one fitted at a main dealer. The cost was about £750 for parts and labour.
