False. Ran my 1986 and 7 pugs on unleaded. Just needed timing altering.

Would have said the opposite was true. When did catalysers come in? Then it would be unleaded only.

Pre 88 models need hardened valve seals to run OK on unleaded.

Well they will ALL run OK on unleaded actually, just that the head/engine life wont be as good on the pre-88 cars is what I meant to say

1992 was when cats were made compulsory

But I think 1989 was the date when all new cars in the UK had to run on unleaded from new.

Going on that it should be ok.

just did a quick check:

1988: All new cars manufactured after 1st April 1988 are required to run on unleaded petrol.
So unleaded is fine

Not sure I'd listen to DW's advice on prolonging Pug engine life

Funny, I always thought it was from about the C-plate on (85?). Ah well, sold both of mine after 6 mths due to relocation...

Funnily enough it was an ex Scooby owner who blew my engine I bought it like that though the problem wasnt supposed to be as big as it is.

my old 309 gti was an '88F and it would run on either, one of those models where you could mix and match, although I was told that if was choosing to run primarily on unleaded, then to put 4* in every 4th tankful...

In 1997 i used to have a Nova 1.2 ( it was my first car ) i ran that on 4 star petrol for the first 6 months, then after that i decided to try unleaded, no probs, so ran on unleaded after that. If his peugeot is an old banger get him to mix and match and see what happens.
