Quick diesels

Quick diesels
I'm thinking about turning to the dark side and buying my self an oil burner. I'd like one that has good comfort levels and is relatively quick. My budget is about 6-7K. I was thinking on the Bmw 325 tds.
Any ideas?

VW, Audi Skoda & seat all share the same floor pans & Engines & would probably enable you to get a newer car for your money. They are all re mapable & that gives a significant increase in power, the 110 bhp engines will go to about 160 & the 130 bhp should give about 190 bhp. All that with 50+ mpg when driving normally, probably nearly 60 if you are careful.
BMW's for some reasopn seem to demand a premium price wise & are also more expensive to fix

By quick i hope you mean fast-ish aka nippy Again not having a dig at all, just fed with the concept of fast diesels, dad owns the bmw as mentioned, and have drove plenty of laguna new spec diesels, it was my job last summer. All diesels will have their doors blown off by somethink quick such as a scoob, pulsar gtir etc The BMW is a nice car, and has stood the time really well. diesels have come along way from old, and are very good, but compare like for like, 1.9 turbo diesel against a 2.0 turbo, or even a 1.8 turbo, its a no brainer. Hope you find a good car, and maybe consider the Alfa 2.4JTD or some of the fiats?

My dad has a 330 D sport, and I would fancy it would keep a standard Uk scoob honest once on the move. AMD also do some interesting tweaks for it
Wont touch my STi though

I am looking at a diesel at the moment as my pocket can no longer tolerate high insurance and low mpg. Seen a 51 reg 330d with very low milage for 17k, but not sure how economical a diesel engine of that size is. I have heard 40 - 45 mpg mentioned. Is that realistic, do you know what sort of results your father gets.
Cheers

I've heard stories that bmw's can be a bit of a handful in the wintery conditions. Bearing in mind that my girlfriend is going to be driving it, Is this a good idea?

I dont think the fuel economy is as brilliant as you would expect. Mid 30's from memory, but I'll find out for you.
His is an auto though, so probably wont be as efficient as a manual. I'm not a fan of BM's at all, but this one has really impressed me. Has the M sport bits on it, and 18" MV's...

Re map should cast about £450 on a rolling road, beware of chipping etc without going on the rollers, results are all over the place & often when mapping Diesels you need to back it off a bit as they often produce too much torque which will kill the transmission
The basic VAG (Audi,Vw etc) are very strong so the engine should be plenty strong enough
Jabbasport are a good place too start if you want a remap as they have been doing these for many years & are getting consistently good results with no horror stories www.jabbasport.com or 01733 211779

They're great to drive for what they are and really punchy when you ride the torque...build quality is 1st class. Only downside really is the way you get treated when you drive them
