Mini (Old one) Question
My dad was given a Mini by a friend of his about 7-8 months ago, it was a proper wreck. He started restoring it and the car is almost ready now. However he doesn't know what kind of model it is in order to buy the proper badges. The only details that he has off the car are:
1.1275cc engine
2.95mph speedo
3.built in 1976
4.The car had plastic arch extensions(small ones)
5.Mille Miglia 4 spoke alloys
I found an internet site that sells badges but i don't know which ones are the right ones. Any clues?
Cheers, XT

The engine is the original one, so probably the speedo was changed. BTW, i thought that GT was the one with the weird looking front.

1275gt's were all based on the clubman, with the front as above. The interior is different too on the clubman - they don't have the large central speedo.
You'd need a Mini expert to be sure, but I don't see how the 1275 engine caan be original unless it's an Innocenti?

It may sound daft but is there a chance of it being a cooper version? Innocenti it certainly isn't because i remember checking the little plate in the engine bay and it had 'BL' on it.

The engine isn't original, it looks like an A+ out of a metro to me.
EDIT: actually, I'm not so sure now, but it definately isn't original as the only 1275 Mini's made in the late 70's were Inocenti's or the 1275GT as pictured above (I think the Aussie Mini's were 1275's too, but they had doors with quarterlights and different handles. It's not a Cooper either as they weren't made that late and IIRC all 1275 Coopers were twin carb.
What you have there is a bitsa, IMHO
Should be fun, though

My apologies then but that's what i was told by the previous owner(same age as my dad, around 65, probably lost his mind then ) Need to start learning stuff about the Minis

I'm pretty sure that even the Euro-spec non-Innocenti's were only 998's by 1976. In absence of anything better to do this morning, I might go and dig one of my Mini reference books out and double check

Good man - it's bugging me, even though it almost certainly is just a replacemnt engine in a 'normal' mini.
I was actually thinking along the lines of maybe African/Aussie version?

does the 1275 have tappet chest covers(down the back of the engine) if it does then its a cooper S engine, maybe try telling what the engine number is?
I could look it up then!
S engines had twin 1 inch 1/4 carbs but after all these years it may have been changed to a single HIF44 (metro MG) as they are better.
Arh takes me back to the time I had 4 mini's before I bought a car I didnt have to spend my life under it

Defo an a+ motor, therefore no way is it the original motor, A+ came out around 1983 or thereabouts, it has the little alternator bracket, and also the verto type clutch lever!!

Doesn`t it tell you on the log book? I had a 1275 GT and that`s what it said on the log book so I would guess it should state which model it is, ie- 1000,Cooper,Cooper S, clubman etc, etc.
