Question What is the best track car for £4K

Want a track day car that I can drive to and from and on Track days
Dont really want to spend more than £4k
Should not cost buckets to keep going.
Any suggestions folks

Buy an old VTS, rip EVERYTHING out of it get a full zorst system and induction kit and you've got a fun little hot-hatch ideal for the track

A track prepped 205 GTi with an Mi16 engine in will be a great choice!

Cool

E30M3 would be nice but I doubt I would find anything any good for £4k
LHD not my favourite either

Had a Westie before, fab car but again finding one for 4k could be a problem
also 3 hours in a 7 getting to a track day is real tough, especially if it rains

Stripped out Saxo VTS sounds cool, may look into that one

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming......

Rich D Hi
Saw one of those at Bedford on that infamous "noise" day (only spectating)
Not yours was it.
Very quick!
Had a 205 GTI a few years ago, bit twitchy but great fun!

OR, you could get an old VTR, strip it right out and get a supercharger kit for it giving you approximately 180-200bhp in a car weighing about 850kg Might be a tad over the £4k budget though.

Nah don't get FWD for a trackday car....RWD farmore fun

Get yourself a AE86 Corolla GT....ok not at home on the bigger circuits but the twisty stuff it will be fanstastic fun, parts are dirt cheap too...

Depends how much you wanna spend on maintaining it etc ...... £4 would get a scooby, a fiat coupe a 200sx etc etc, 200bhp cars (ish) ..... but then looking after it tyres, brakes, engine etc is gonna be expensive ..... something like a 205 gti or Mk2 golf GTi is cheap as chips to buy and mod then cheap to run too

Looks like the sort of thing I am after, great pics by the way. Now I will show my ignorance, I dont remember the Mi16 engine being a standard fit in the GTI, is this a transplant or a head change or was it produced?

Dream Weaver sounds like you have gone the same route, where are you tracking it? I ought to take a closer look at these!

only 1400 miles, never road registered but has all the paperwork to do so including new MOT

1991 ex-cup race winning clio

very slightly over what you want to spend but this is a proven race car, not a road car with some go faster bits nailed on.

pm me if you're interested...

S14 200SX. My mate is seeling one with reasonable mileage, full Mongoose, Boost controller and Airfilter for 4500.
RWD, LSD as standard and 200bhp out of the box.
I've got one as a road car and I regularly use it for drifting competitions at silverstone
astraboy.

MR2 Turbo ? RWD, 220bhp out of the box, Toyota build quality and a strong, reliable engine.

They were standard in the 405 mi16 and Citroen BX 16v. A very pupular conversion coz they give 160hmp as standard, and lots more available

I would also recommend looking in the pistonheads for sale section for race/tracl/rally cars

another vote for a 200sx here. Late model S13 better than a S14 for the track

As rb has said re the Mi engine.

I'm doing the scooby shootout in 2 weeks - www.scoobyshootout.co.uk though unfortunately, I havent had time to get the engine rebuilt yet, so having to run with knackered rings

Looks std as well:

I'd have a look in the back of Autoport Magazine. Always loads of ex-racing cars for sale. Probably easier making them road legal than a road car ready for the track.

There is a Clio Cup racer for sale at £1800 similar to RRH's. It needs some attention but could be good.

Saw it in a mag somewhere I think, but cant remember now - could have been Retro cars, redline or TRC. Some more here as well - http://www.bookatrack.com/-pC
