Default BMW residuals

Just had a good old laugh to myself there.....

There is a 4 year old Beemer 318 coupe in this week's Autotrader for sale, and the guy has it priced at.....

Wait for it!

86% Residual Value! LMFAO!

I though it may have been a typo, but the guy qualifies his advert by stating "price is reflective of condition" lol

If thats the case, then my RB5 must be worth at least £35-£37K???

You gotta love Beemer drivers!

Are you implying that BMW owners have a slightly inflated view of their cars?

I know they hold their value but that's ridiculous! Especially for a boring 318!

I don't.

Are you taking 'list' as the basic price i.e. pre-options?

If so, then if it includes Sat Nav, Sunroof, Auto etc then it seems plausible.

The only options listed in the ad are "half leather", "18's" and "climate control"...... (not even sure if they are options or standard on the Ci.....

Anyway, "options" are a bit like modifications in that they do little for residual values.

Take the E49 M5 for example.

Most of the M5's on the road are fully loaded, and if you were to tick every box on BMW's options list when new, you'll receive a bill for £82k.

You can still pick up a "fully loaded" W reg for £22k! Including Nappa leather, Sat Nav, etc etc etc.

What good did the "options" do for the residuals?

I just bought a 1982 E28 version 635 CSi for £450. Came with 23yrs of service history. Had BMW carry out a search of their database for the car to find out more information. Came up trumps too...it is the first E28 version 635 in the UK, it featured on the BMW stand at the 1982 Motor Show, was delivered to Chandlers of Brighton with a full option pack...ZF switchable automatic box, LSD, aircon, climate control, cruise control etc. It also has full leather etc too. Seven tiny blisters on the bodywork that are easily sorted and are just surface blister.

Took it to the local BMW dealership who checked it over completely....they value the car as it stands at £5000 to £7000.

Not a bad investment for £450. And no, I will not be selling it either, I been wanting a 635 since passing my test in 1981, this car stays with me now.

Mmm. There's a few owners (Subaru included) on here with the same detachment from reality. Check out the cars for sale section at some point.

Cheers

Not to the tune of expecting 86% retained value after 4 years!!!!
