Talking Can a Cosworth be used as a daily runner?

Local ford garage selling a mint Escort Cosworth 50 000 miles clean as a whistle ~£5000

Used to use the Scooby as a daily run about.... no probs......

Is this feasable with a cossy or is it gonna be a nightmare that's spends days with the bonnet up?

looking for some serious pros and cons.....

Cheers

Don't know about the Escort but I ran a Sierra for two years no problems.
£5k for an Escort Cosworth seems cheap or have their prices plummeted?

That price can't be right! They go for £15,000 these days (More than bugeyes )

A cossie is a very strong motor and very docile, they are so easy and lazy to drive off boost then all hell lets loose once on boost. They really are a joy to drive.

They are much stronger than the scoob ever will be and I guess that they aren't quite as nickable as scoobs these days because they stand out too much.

I'd say for that price it's a bit suspect though.

Cars over here (Switzerland) are cheap as chips as people tend to be a little snob about cars over 5 years old!

You can pick up a Porsche Carrea 4 1990 for around 12 K

The website to check......

www.autoscout24.ch

Only it's in German, French or Italian!

Cheap as chips motoring!

Sure, they can be used as a daily runner, no bother.
I used my Stage 3 saff, ran it everyday, clocked up 12k in 7 months, never missed a beat.

As for an Esc Cos for 5k... bit suspect !!!

If it's a LHD could be around that figure I've seen a couple of LHD Escort Cossies for around 8K , their well over priced normally and the sierra is just as quick. Same drive train and engine and floor plan these go for less than 5k all day long! Over rated car though every article I've got on the Escort Cossie it always got beaten as a drivers car by other machinery i. e Integrale, Scooby and Quattro to name a few. Tony

redevo - ive ready articles where escort cossies are rated over the cars uve mentioned.

also, the residuals on the esc cos are much better. it aint just smaller numbers available, integrales/quattros aint exactly common.

ps sorry dont want to turn this into the my dik is bigger than ure dik type threads, even tho i know my ***** is bigger

Cool

Always loved the Escort cossy... it just looked the nuts!

I did have a WRX for over 2 years and thought it was awesome just a bit too common and dare I say lacking in character? Reliability was great which is always a plus and one of the reasons I bought it!

Cossy/intergrale were always my childhood dream cars!

Intergrale repair bills frankly scare the pants off me! But what about a cosworth would it be a dependable dream car?

Why do I laugh so much when I see posts with people believing everything they read in magazine articles.

In answer to your original question, yes an Esc Cos is fine as an everyday car. I used mine for 2 years as one, with not one problem. Although I have a runaround now [because of fuel costs] I wouldn't hesitate to use the Cos as one again.

As for reliability, mine has always been 100%, bar the gearbox going after doing 30 trackdays in little under a year and it has 65k on the clock

The Article were the Escort doesn't do as well as the other cars mentioned are Performance Car, Top Gear Magazine, REVS, Autocar,CAR and Auto Italia so there's a wide range of mags ranging from the younger market up to the old car buyers magazine and they all rated it below the other contenders.
Residuals are high due to die hard RS fans that are willing to pay silly money so they can have the ultimate RS because that's the car they have grown up with from there XR2I through there RS Turbos and want to own the top Cosworth.
I thought about buying an Escort Cosworth myself a couple of years ago so I went about chatting to ex-owners at Scooby and Lancia meets, etc. And most of the people I spoke to weren't impressed with the engine and handling compared to what they now own weather it be a Grale or Scooby. I have a couple of friend's that have Cosworths and they have also had nothing but problems with them. And I've taken one out and wasn't overly impressed with the precision of steering feel and power delivery and in the end decided against it. The main thing the car had going for it was it's looks but it just wasn't for me. Tony

i've read the same article in REVS essy vs scoob vs grale vs i cant remember. sure the essy didnt win but it wasnt lashed death and i'm sure they had several points to praise it one being the straight line performance. i seem to remember they didnt like the lag the turbo produced in mid corner all or nothing acceleration.

i've read in revs a cossie vs grale vs fiat coupe vs quattro shoot out, the cossie came out tops.

in the same mag again, e30 m3 vs cossie, m3 rated better drivers cars but the cossie was substantially faster.

but who gives a flying fvck what some journo says, i buy my cars on driving them, mags contradict themselves week to week they have to create interest and debates such as this. anyone who judges a car on what wom3 mag says is sad imo. obviously if they say a known crap car is crap then fair enough but when we're talking about such cars as these we're splitting hairs over 1/10ths of a second and how the journo feels that day.

there are die hard subaru fans, evos, novas, corsas, blah blah to say this pushes up prices is daft imo.

some cossies are trouble, some are not. ive had two, one was a mess but i bought it as such, one was a pearler and never let me down. great cars, performance bargains, amazing engines.

btw i own a my99 type ra

Question

Just seen the link above. What damage would it be to import one of these from Switzerland? I assume that import tax/vat is applicable. Does the car being over 10 years old affect the rules on importing?
