Should have got a Clio Sport
God damnit, fast little buggers ain't they?
Just had a race with one from about 40 up to 90, and could only gain slightly on it! Mind, I've got a lardy WRX03, but still very, very impressed with the Clio..
It was probably turbo charged (yes, I'm clutching at straws )
I guess rolling starts isn't the strong point of a WRX, eh?
How much is a Clio Sport?

Not turbo charged, just fast. We pick my girlfriend's up on Saturday - Cup version which is even lighter than the Sport.
Power to weight ratio of 171 BHP..... compared to 161 BHP of WRX.... Going to be fun for sure.
I paid £10,650 OTR

I was tempted, but im an engineer. If I look in my car park at work, there's not many french cars nuff said.
But if I was buying a frog mobile, the 172 would be it. Sounds like great fun, just too too many stories of problems, which would drive me mad going from a reliable jap mobile.

agree with you there, and so do a lot of people.. hense why my mate has just taken a 04 CTR over a 182. drove them both and he said it was like comparing a scooby to an evo, but the honda is so much the better car to put ur own money into without doubt

Wife's got a clio 1.2, and it's almost more fun to drive than the scooby sometimes... The clio defo has more chuckability, but maybe i'm a crap driver Scoob just feels really big, wide and heavy sometimes... Even though you're doing half the speed in the clio, it feels like you're doing twice the speed of the scoob
I have visions of myself buying a clio cup now, and towing it to different race circuits behind the scoob How much would a Cup set us back? Wife wants one

IMHO Cup's are better than scoobs for commuting unless you take in lots of motorways (having commuted in 3 different scoobs and a cup over past 3 years). I would say above 4000rpm or 85ish the Cup is pretty noisy. However more fun at low speeds and nippier than scoobs in traffic and clutch isnt as heavy (certainly compared to a P1). Also ours averages about 41.5mpg (according to fuel computer) on optimax on commute (compared for low 20s for same trip day in day out in scoobs). Insurance and parts are also significantly cheaper.
Oh nothings gone wrong with ours yet either after 19 months ownership.

Imprezas (classic) hardly offer the quietest motorway experience, the 182 I got a lift to work in last week was far better. Shame bits were starting to rattle already, the guy who owns it had a 172 before, he tells me the 182 is far better built and a much better drive. Still wasn't great for noise though.
It seemed to shift well enough with 2 big blokes in it though.

Me other half has a Clio Cup. They are indeed very quick. Handling is superb.
However, for an everyday car I can't stand it.
Get neck ache after driving for a long period.
Noisy (high revs or 80mph cruising)
Pedals are too close together (built for girls)
when pushing clutch down and turning steering wheel, you can feel the steering column moving)
But, did I say it was quick and handles like a dream
Oh and cheap to insure - cheaper than our previous Sport 172
Still no match for my STi

Our second car is a Cup and it has seen 3 Impreza's come and go in its time in our family!
When I bought the Cup, I had a MY00 UK Turbo, which I changed for a MY03 STi PPP and I now have an RB5 WR Sport.
In many ways the Clio is much more fun than any of them and choosing which keys to take in the mornings can be a bit of a dilemma.
As for the "ah but, what about the wet and twisties" bull$hit.....
The age-old Scooby-owner cop-out!
Grasping at straws just cos the smaller, nimbler, more chuckable, just as fast (a lot of the time) cheaper fenchie threatens the Scooby's crown!!!
Cup cost us under £11k OTR brand new.
STi PPP £27k OTR......
Cup has better power to weight ratio than UK Turbo/WRX.
If only the Cup had a flat 4.... (sigh)

Clarebabes,
I'm sure you will love the Cup, as we do.
I much prefer the lighter, wider faster version of the 172 than the Sport.
Who needs leather, Xenons, air con etc etc?
One thing I would say is, I believe the Cup comes with optional ABS now?
If so, take it.
I know the purists will say don't, but my other half had a minor "off" in circumstances where ABS would have prevented it.
All in all though, a little belter!

My wife has Just got an '02 STI and I drive a CTR (I am using her log on atm). I have also driven the Clio Cup. TBH I think it handled like a dream, just prefered the CTR for driving possition and the quality of the brakes, gear box and engine. (I find the box and brakes mutch better than the STI even...). As for the STi...well put it this way it is a better driver than me. I think i'd ease off before the Scooby finds its limit. If ya know what I mean. The CTR much like the Clio seems more chuckable, especialy once you have spend £50 on the Civic's geometry, totally transforms the; much maligned, steering feel.
