Default Autocar's UrQuattro 20v vs Sti test

Anyone remember about two years ago when AutoCar compared the UrQuattro 20v to the 2002 sti and found no on-road differene in capability?

Now I know that Autocar is a very poor journal, with about as much rigor and depth to their tests- as the testing done at GoodHousekeeping mag, but I hear that Sutcliff and Harris are pretty good drivers, so I tend to believe them somewhat. Anyway, I think the evo boys should do a retest of these two, only with both modified to make them more competitive. That is, a 350hp conversion, adjustable shocks, and suitable wheels/brakes on the Audi, and a move up from sti to the litchfield 25. Now that would be an interesting road test. I know the Audi would not have the agility, but what it would lack in adjustability I think it would make-up in stabilty.

Yeah, but then you would want the original's that rulled at the time i.e late 80's-early 90's. The Cossie and without a doubt the greatest of all the Grale! I know Evo did the 4X4 supertest but this was **** poorly done due to the fact the cars weren't standard. And was far from in-depth. I've got a copy of Performance car with all the great's in it, Subaru,Cossie,GTIR,Integrale and the Audi, Which is a far better comparison 5 standard cars as the factory intended, as when you start with modded cars then the Original idea gets diluted somewhat and alters the way the factory intended. My brother has a UR quattro which is heavily modd'ed! It is pushing out about 320bhp, has RS2 front and rear brakes, Koni suspension etc.

On track the quattro is pretty impressive(when it's running well), but on the track it is no were near as quick or agile as my 1994 STI RA which again is heavily modd'ed.

Still looks the business.

Dom,

Yeah thats what I'm talking about- a nicely modded UrQ. See there is something that people might be missing here; and this is the issue of agility vs stability. Nobody argues that Impreza's are more agile and adjustable than UrQuattro (and all Quatto's for this matter) , but the real question is posed for driving on real roads...because on real roads I believe that suddenly the UrQ's extra stabilty and seemingly auto self-centering ability seem to work rather well. I'd like to see a test comparing the best of each to help answer some fundamental questions about what actually works on road as opposed to on track. I think these questions have not really been discussed too much even in mags like evo. Anyway bottom line is, I think the modded UrQ and Impreza would be a lot closer on raod than most would believe and it would be found that each would have certain abilities that the other does not.

It never fails to suprise me that you hardly ever see a ur quattro at track days, you can pick a goodun' up for a couple of grand and with a little bit of work it can be a real flier!!!

The engine is very strong so you can up the boost quite a lot, my brother has an RS2 ECU and injectors etc. The brakes do need upgrading, the RS2 Porker front set up from the RS2 fits inside the standard 15" alloys and these are superb.

Here she is at Goodwood.

The Escort Cossworth came last no surprise there, then the Skyline 4th, Audi 3rd then the Integrale Evo 2nd then the Subaru 1st. From what I can read of it the Lancia and Subaru were similar rating by Performance mag but awarded the Subaru due to the fact it wasn't as in your face as the Grale. Saying that people will by a Integrale due to how it looks were as the Impreza wins you over purely on ability. And the Quattro 20v 'lovely car thought about getting one instead of Grale "stating that it gave "the ultimate level of grip". Tony

The 20V is a very different beast to the 10V, you'll be very lucky to find a 20V in good nick for under 10K as these are very desirable.

I have a 1991 J 20V which is one of the last every made and is a fantastic car to drive and very smooth and refined. This car is totally standard as I believe it is worth quite a lot of money.

Hers a picture of the Black Beauty.......

The thing with the Audi quattro is its very sure footed, you can plant your right foot very early coming out of a bend and it just grips, very confidence inspiring and easy to drive fast...........but the down side, if you push too hard with them and overstep the mark, its big problems, its a case of close your eyes and pray.
They are not so agile on switchback type of roads either, but on most roads going A - B they are still very fast, match up very well too most of the current crop of rally inspired cars, amazing when you think there mid 80's, and lets be honest they do look the part.
