I have to strip a Jaguar V12 engine and have no idea what I am doing, how hard?
As above, I am normally pick things up very quickly but I have to strip the engine within 4 weeks as I am moving house and it is far to heavy to lift.
It has heads on (one has had all the bolts taken out but appears to have sealed to the gaskets), most of gear box, crank shaft and pistons etc.
Has anyone stripped an engine and is it hard?
Any advice much appreciated.
James

I doubt a rubber mallet will move them as a 10lb lump hammer wouldn't
Knocked **** out of the heads though!!!

Engine is a pig to work on compared to my usual Rover V8's..but then again Rover v8's are probably the most basic engine you could ever work on!
I did have a workshop manual somewhere...but it's missibng under a huge pile of crap in the loft.
Have a look in this general guide on the XJS. Engine work is on page 55 onwards...beware it's a huge file:

Ali, thanks for the link mate. I also picked up a V8 yesterday which is pretty much stripped but has sump on, crank shaft, con rods and pistons in. How hard is it to get these bits out? (I need all of these parts)

For a Rover V8:
1/2" 12 point socket
3/4" socket
Ratchet and a long lever bar for the main bearing caps
Hammer
Very easy, remove sump 13mm/ 1/2" socket. Remove oil pickup (12mm I think). You may have a windage tray (depends on what car the engine came out of). Which is just 13mm bolts and a nut/bolt underneath the oil pickup and the two tags holding the pickup on.
Piston and rods come out the top, just need to guide the rods out and avoid scratching the bores. I use a long 10mm socket over the 1 stud and an extension bar and tap out any reluctant rods/pistons.
Rods/pistons are directional, so make sure you put them back in the right way round

I thought the usual trick with XJ heads was to leave the motor in the car, undo the head bolts, chain the heads to an overhead girder, winch the front of the car off the ground using the chains then leave overnight?
